CRC Industries Inc. 03040 Food Grade Silicone Review

(More customer reviews)I'll start by repeating what I said from my other review of CRC's Food Grade Grease.
I'm very sensitive to chemical odors and vapors that linger for months. For example oil, gasoline, grease, WD-40 type lubricants etc. They are not good for your health either. I wanted to find a silicone lubricant that was odorless and also nontoxic so did a little research and found that "Food Grade" silicone was what I needed. There are a few lubrication products on the market from different manufacturers that are classified as Food Grade but Amazon carried this brand so I ordered it.
I'm very happy with this product, it's odorless and since it is registered as a NSF H1 class lubricant it is very safe. I specifically purchased this to use on the rubber guide channels of my car's power windows. I have a vintage (old) car and the power windows were very slow to roll up. After spraying this silicone lubricant down the rubber guides for the glass, the windows roll up much easier now. I could hear the motor working free with less resistance as before. Best part is there are no odors even though I'm sitting in the car with the windows very close by.
I also use this to lubricate the belt on an electric treadmill that my mother use. Prior to this I used a standard silicone spray on the treadmill...big mistake! The odors from the non-Food Grade silicone were horrible especially when you're walking or jogging on the treadmill. Not something you'd want to breath in when gasping for air during a workout! With the Food Grade silicone there is no smell from the treadmill.
This Food Grade silicone is very useful for lubricating other things in and around the home too like door hinges, window guides etc. This sprays on wet so it is able to penetrate tight spaces with ease. I highly recommend this product for those who are sensitive to chemical odors like myself.

Like the indoor kits a bunch, the outdoor kits are good also, with ample plastic and tape, but the tape does not stick as well as previous brands I have used, namely 3 m. I had only one window really pull up last year, and that was in 30 mile an hour winds. So far I have had 4 windows to re-touch the tape up on. They appear to be holding for now, but I hope they withstand the winter. Check around, but these will do if you have very good, dry and clean window sills. My window sills are older paint, and the stick factor is low with this brand of tape. Should do fine for most folks.

MD Building Products 4283 Shrink & Seal Indoor Window Kits Review

(More customer reviews)We have a basement family room that was very drafty and cold. You could actually feel the cold coming off of the windows even with the blinds and curtains. In order to be comfortable we would have to turn the heat up to 75. We can't afford to replace the sliding door and windows right now so I found this at a local home improvement store and thought for less then $10 I'll give it a try.
It took me an hour to put up by myself. I highly recommend 2 people if possible. The directions on the box are easy to follow and are accurate in my opinion. Clean the entire door and frame thoroughly and make sure it's dry. Doing that will help the adhesive tape stick. You may have issues installing this if it is really cold too. The directions recommend about 40F I think. Don't rush when applying the plastic to the tape. Start in one corner and work over from there. It was easier for me to do the left side of the sliding door first then the right. The plastic doesn't have to be very tight across the door. When you heat it the excess will go away. If the plastic comes off the tape just press it back on. It's not supposed to stick too much right away just in case you need to adjust the plastic. When you start heating it, the adhesive will activate. Don't forget to keep an extra 2 inches of shrink past the tape. I guess you can figure out why...it shrinks. The directions said to hold the blow dryer a few inches from the plastic. My blow dryer must be extra hot because it was about 4 inches away and it made a hole in the top of the door. That being said, it may be a good idea to start further away and at the top just in case this happens to you. Don't hold the blow dryer on one spot for too long either. Once you start you'll realize it goes pretty quickly. The taping process took much longer then the actual shrinking. Also, if the plastic gets little wrinkles as you're shrinking, just go back over that spot and it will go away.
The plastic looks clear and you can't tell it's there unless you are up close to the door. We have 2 cats and 2 kids and it's been on for a month without any major issues. My oldest ripped it a little at the door handle so I had to patch it with the leftover shrink. I gave this 4 stars because I think the tape could have been a little better. Also, we cannot use our sliding door. I honestly didn't think about it until after it was on. There may be a way to put it on and still use it but we have other doors. I'll trade not using the door for a warmer family room and cheaper electric bill. I plan on using this again next year. I am going back to get the window kit. We are much more comfortable now and don't have to wear 5 layers just to watch TV.(smile) I recommend trying this product for those cold winter months.

The adhesive is on the window side of the stripping, and the material (yes, it's material not screening) is supposed to cling to the "hooked" side (NOT!!). The shipping cost as much as the product, so I wish I'd just measured up and bought a screen window kit for 12.50.

CRL 5-3/16" Window Sash Spring - 12 Pack Review

The only problem was that the replacement springs were too wide for the windows so I had to grind off a total of 3/16 inch from the width to use them. I'd do it again, particularly since I could find no other options. The windows now work very well.
