Here's why: the "kit" contains (1) a padded quilt cover (what you see in the picture), (2) some padding material that as far as I can see is the same stuff you use to wrap crockery if you are moving ("windblock foam liner" indeed...) and (3) a roll of sellotape that doesn't stick. Having "assembled" my cover (using my own tape), I can still feel the cold air rushing in whenever the wind blows. So that makes a nonsense of the "Seal your air conditioner in winter to prevent heat loss" statement: if I can feel the cold wind coming in, the heat is definitely going out.
My previous do-it-yourself solution was to place a layer of bubble wrap over the AC, held in place by some elastic - it was far more effective than this contraption, and far cheaper.
