(More customer reviews)The former owner of the home we bought a few years ago had installed sunblocking film over all the windows on the south and west sides of the house. After more than a year of scraping the smelly film off with razor blades we were gleeful to find Gila Film Solution - and then we were very disappointed to discover it did nothing on our film. We might has well sprayed with vinegar. Maybe it works with other films but not ours.

(More customer reviews)NY Wire Screen Frame Kits are pretty good. I am making vinyl storm-type windows for my garage. Works only with thin vinyl. The corner springs and pull-handles are not useable. Ther should make some other size kits, and the corner connectors should be offered separately. I have had to cut down several of the longer pieces (comes only in 36" and 48"), and needed more corner connectors...still trying to locate them. The frames are quite thin and need "help" to hold them in/down. I'm using the small aluminum screen screw-in adjustable hold-downs, which work OK, and are definitely needed on the longer sides. Just glad that SOMETHING is out there for a reasonable price without having to replace all of my windows, or hire a specialist to make custom windows!

(More customer reviews)I used the Gila Platinum film. After reading multiple reviews, I decided to take the advice and perform a few additional steps. First, I rerolled the product in reverse to flatten it out several hours before working with it. I used a long table and a rotary cutter and mat to cut the product. When pulling the backing off to expose the sticky surface,, start at one corner and immediately tape the corner down to the table when the backing is pulled off. Then tape down the adjacent corner. You can then pull the backing straight off and tape the lower corners. The most important thing is to make sure that both the window surface and the sticky surface of the film are very wet. On one piece of film, we didn't wet it enough and it stuck to itself. We had to throw it away. For the rest of the windows we totally soaked the film and the window. This allows the film to slide on the window when you squeegee it making it easier to remove bubbles. When picking up the film from the table, we attached clothespins or clips to the bottom corners to weigh them down so they wouldn't curl. My husband held the top of the film and put it on the window while I guided the bottom part of the film. Once the film was firmly attached to the window and smooth, we used the razor in the kit to cut the edge. I would not try to apply this alone unless you are doing very small windows. We were doing double hung windows that are 30 inches by 60 inches and French doors. The film has made a tremendous difference in our family room which gets the afternoon sun. Our windows are now cool to the touch.

Debating trying to do without buying the kit, but I think that the kit and especially the solution is the reason why my film hasn't peeled, bubbled, or moved at all over the past 8 months. Since this is in our only bathroom too, it definitely gets plenty of steam exposure.

Gila LES361 Heat Control Residential Window Film, Platinum, 36-Inch by 15-Feet Review

(More customer reviews)My wife and I have now installed this film on several windows and two patio doors in our home. In the process, we have messed up a couple of times, but managed to figure out why (see helpful hints below).
I don't know how effective the heat control film is at keeping out the heat. Only time will tell.
But here are three recommendations for "frustration free" installation:
1) ALWAYS have someone helping you. Don't even think about instalilng this without at least two people.
2) Before peeling the film (very sticky) from the liner, spray both sides generously. This helps cut down on the static electricity, which causes the film to curl and stick to itself--often resulting in ruined film and frustrated installers.

3) Gila does not suggest this, but it worked like a charm with us (after we had messed up, unfortunately). Before you peel the liner from the film, have your helper clip two clothespins to the bottom two corners while you hold the top corners (this will prevent the corners from curling and sticking). As your partner begins to peel the liner from the film (slowly!), have him/her spray the sticky side generously. When there is about an inch of liner left to peel, go ahead and apply the film to the window. Before squeegeeing to the window, remove the clothespins and the last inch or two of liner. If you follow this important step, you should not have problems with the film curling. I don't know why Gila does not suggest this. Maybe they have not thought of it yet.
BTW: I just sprayed regular water on the non-sticky side when squeegeeing the film to the window. I also did this when spraying both sides to ward off static electricity. I did use the Gila stuff, however, on the sticky side of the film and on the window.
