I bought this product because I read such glowing reviews on the HD website and on other websites that talked about different brands of tubular skylights.
It took 3 attempts to get an undamaged skylight delivered from ODL. I needed the 14" which Home Depot did not have in stock so I ordered online from Home Depot. The product comes directly from the manufacturer however. Before installing the skylight I blamed FedEx for rough treatment and the flimsiness of the box it comes in for the damage. After installing the skylight I see now that it is extremely easy to bend and damage just by handling it and trying to adjust the angle.
My husband and I are very experienced do-it-yourselfers. There are few remodeling projects that we have not tackled. I thought this would be a really easy project based on the video and what I read from other's who had installed it. It probably is fairly easy if you have a straight shot from the hole in the ceiling of the room through the attic to the hole in the roof. We unfortunately did not have this situation. We required 2-48" extensions. Because of having to deal with an awkward angle and the extension tubes this project took us the better part of a day - approximately 7 hours.
The installation in the ceiling is a snap. The roof was pretty straight forward. It was working with the tubes that was a hassle.
My biggest complaint is that the angled parts of the tube do not slide easily and get bent up as you try to adjust them to the angle you need. In general all the tubes bend and dent easily causing them to be difficult to seal when you attach them together.
While trying to adjust the angled tube from the roof it came apart and no matter how hard we tried we were not able to get it back together and just had to tape it which did not give a good seal.
I was so excited to get the skylight installed and bring light into my dark kitchen. The end result was disappointing. I'm not sure why, but the skylight does not bring much light in and certainly not the amount as was advertised even on a clear, sunny day. It could be because of all the difficulty we had with the installation and the bent up tubes.
If you plan to buy this product I recommend only buying directly from the HD store. That way you can return it if you have the kind of trouble we did - damaged when you open the box and parts breaking during installation.
