I've had two of these for a couple of years, just starting my third summer with them. For the climate where I live, a good window fan can greatly reduce the amount of electricity that you use. Temperatures get up into the 80s or 90s, but at night it cools down pretty quickly most of the time here. Being able to blow that cool air into the house in the evening and keep it cool all night saves several hours of running the air conditioning. I usually leave the fans on to get pretty chilly overnight so the house has a head start on staying cool the next day. This way I can avoid running AC until 3-4 in the afternoon much of the time, then run it for a few hours before it cools off in the evening again.
With that as the backdrop, this product does what it's supposed to do and is a good value for the price. It fits neatly in my dual-pane vinyl windows. Normal flow blows cool night air and outdoor smells in (the latter can be a good or bad thing, of course). The reverse flow is nice for blowing cooking odors or pet dander out of the house. If you don't want to get too cold at night you can set the thermostat, which works as advertised. The product has so far stood up to some not-always gentle use at my home without problems. It's quiet, light, easy to handle, easy to clean (vacuum it with a dust brush), and the controls are all simple and effective. If you live in the right kind of climate like I do, this fan can help you to save a lot of money on energy bills. I figure that mine paid for themselves in a couple of months of summer weather.
One thing that you need to keep in mind about this fan is that it's just not very powerful, which is to say that it doesn't move very much air. It won't cool a whole house down but will eventually cool down a medium to large sized room. Sometimes when the wind is blowing it makes more sense to not use the fan and let mother nature move the air herself. The lack of power is the downside of this window fan being so light, quiet, and inexpensive. If you want to move more air into or out of your home in a hurry, expect to spend $100 or more and look for a larger window fan that advertises a flow rate of 2000CFM or more. Tellingly, I didn't see a flow rate stated anywhere for the Holmes fan, indicating that it's not trying to compete against the bigger models.
Overall this fan was a good buy in terms of ROI, dependability, usability and increased comfort.
