Techko S097 Indoor/Outdoor Pool Alarm, Magnetic Sensor, Solar Powered Review

Techko S097 Indoor/Outdoor Pool Alarm, Magnetic Sensor, Solar Powered
Average Reviews:

The instructions are inadequate and inconsistent. The product is the poorest made thing I have every purchased. The plastic tab that covers the battery compartment does not snap shut and merely falls off. It is impossible to mount the sensors with the double sided tape and use the sensor housing that allegedly will protect them from the weather. The double sided tape is not sufficient to hold up the solar battery portion. It is too late to return it so will be filing this one in the trash.

Techko's patented Safe Pool provides alarm protection to outdoor gates or home doors leading to potentially dangerous pool and spa areas. The Safe Pool features weather resistant construction and mounts directly to either wood or metal doors, windows or gates with the convenience of a built-in solar powered battery. When children open the protected door, window or gate by more than 1 each, the unit will sound its built-in 110 dB high output alarm, notifying nearby adults of the attempted entry. The by-pass button allows entry to exit for adults without sounding the alarm, but if the sensors are left open the alarm will sound within 7 seconds. Once the door, window or gate is closed, the unit will reset automatically to resume protection. The Plant Furniture Company 1003 Herb Plant Light Box Review

The Plant Furniture Company 1003 Herb Plant Light Box
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a handsome looking unit from the picture and it looks good in a kitchen too. However, given it's cost, I was disappointed by the quality of materials and instructions provided.
This type of lighting could be expensive and in this arena, I think it's a good product. However, the finish is very inexpensive and in my opinion poor quality. The wood is also inexpensive and even the cord and swith on the cord seems to be an area where the manufacturer cut some corners.
The assemble instructions that came with mine were very poor photocopies with equally poorly written materials. I had to assemble and disassemble the unit a few times to get it right. Interestingly, there were actually TWO sets of instructions for assembly included with different part names, letters or numbers, neither of which had diagrams that were highly resolved enough to see except for one.
I think this is a nice unit for growing herbs, but their are others out there and some are even less expensive. There is also a similar unit to this which is a different color, but they are basically the same and my comments hold for both.
I must say that overall, I am somewhat disappointed with this purchase. For this kind of money, I expect better quality and better enclosed materials. I realize it's possible I got bad photocopies, but I'm sure I got the same finish, power cord, switch and parts that others will get.
I advise that you shop around and see what you can get for your money. There is one unit which I haven't set up yet called AeroGarden which is also sold on Amazon. Chef's seem to like it and my understanding is that you can grow herbs and vegetables up to five times faster with this method. I bought one, but didn't set it up yet. I will review it when I get a chance to see how it performs.

Friedrich XQ08l10A AC 8000 BTU 115V 10.8 SLIDEOUT
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This thing really throws out the cold air. I measured the air temperature at 26 deg. coming out of the vent. Most other AC's I've had are around 38-40 deg. I really like the programmable features as I have it set to go on about an hour or 2 before I go to bed so my room is nice and cool, and it goes off in the middle of the night. The low fan speed is also very low which makes it quieter. I've noticed on a lot of other units the low speed is not that low, so you get more fan noise. Also the compressor seems relatively quiet, not sure if it's any quieter than other units, but I don't have a problem sleeping with this on, and I'm sensitive to noise when I sleep.
On the negative side, when the compressor first comes on it's a little noisier for a couple minutes then quiets down. So if it's cycling on and off very much, it can be irritating, probably not too noticeable though if it's not in a bedroom. Also the thermostat goes down to 60 deg, but it won't get the room that cold, it usually starts cycling on and off at about 67-68, but it still can get the room down to 64-65 deg.
It's a solid AC, seems like it shouldn't have the negatives I mentioned for the price of the unit, but it still throws out a lot of very cold air, so it could be worth it.

Royal Sovereign ARP-4009 Portable Air Conditioner 9,000 BTU Review

Royal Sovereign ARP-4009 Portable Air Conditioner 9,000 BTU
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We purchased the royal Sovereign ARP-4009 June 2008, used it last summer for about 3 months and didn't turn it on again until July of this year. It worked for about one week and stopped blowing cold air after that. The unit still turns on and produces air but it blows hot air. We realized that we had just missed the one-year Full Warranty period but the unit still qualifies for the Limited Five Year Warranty which the manufacture will replace the compressor (parts only). I looked up for Royal Sovereign's website for a service contact and they showed a total of 10 in California. I called two and were told by both that they do not service Royal Sovereign anymore. I called a 3rd repair shop which is approximately 45 miles from my house. I made an appointment and brought the unit in. They informed me after a week that there was a problem with the compressor and the condenser. Even though, the parts will be supplied by Royal Sovereign but their labor would cost $250. For the price, we could almost purchase a new portable air condition.
I don't understand how the unit would stop working after one year or to be exact, 3 months of usage. I am frustrated that Royal Sovereign does not have enough service locations which made it very difficult to compare price on the repair. The next closest repair shop to me is approximately 60+ miles away and a totally different direction from the first shop that gave me the estimate. And we only live 20 miles East of downtown Los Angeles!

Frigidaire FAP094P1Z 9,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Electronic Controls Review

Frigidaire FAP094P1Z 9,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Electronic Controls
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Consumer Reports says this portable air conditioner is much less efficient than a comparable window unit. It's definitely more expensive than a window air conditioner (probably at least double the cost); you're paying for appearance and convenience, not functionality. (It's easy to disconnect this unit and roll it away into a corner or closet.)
I bought two of these for two rooms with sliding casement windows that posed problems for window units -- and I didn't want to bother with installing and then removing bulky window units every season. One of the rooms is a very large bedroom with a cathedral ceiling, and the Frigidaire portable air conditioner has no problem keeping it cool. Your options for placing the unit are rather limited -- there is a somewhat flexible duct that must be run from the back of the unit to a window (or a hole through an exterior wall), and you also need a nearby electrical outlet, preferably on an isolated circuit.

Glide-Along - Automatic Sliding Patio Door Closer Review

Glide-Along - Automatic Sliding Patio Door Closer
Average Reviews:

This is a worthless cheap poorly designed piece of trash. Don't waste your money. It's just a couple of pieces of PVC that slide in and out of each other with a spring inside. Chances are it won't fit on your door the way it is originaly intended unless the sider has about two inches of exposed frame at the top. Most sliding doors don't. Which means that you will have to use the alternate method and install it verticaly on the back end of the sider. This looks tacky and doesn't really work all that well. I had to take the entire thing apart and redesign it so the spring had more tension to get it to close the door.

Royal Sovereign ARP-1008 Portable Air Conditioner 8,000 BTU Review

Royal Sovereign ARP-1008 Portable Air Conditioner 8,000 BTU
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, the good - it is utterly simple to set up with excellent instructions. It glides smoothly across the floor and has an ample cord. I purchased this one because of one I bought several years ago that has run like a charm. The cooling ducts angle well and move smoothly.
Why only 3 stars you ask? Some moron designed this air conditioner to run only with a remote; there isn't even a power switch on board. If you lose the remote (we all know that never happens), break the remote or it ceases to function you have no air conditioner. Would I have bought it knowing that - NO and Amazon should be ashamed for not making that little feature clear in their product description. Too bad as this is a 5 star unit in 3 star clothes.

The other reviewer, Alesia, summed up my experiences to a tee (i.e., abysmal). All I will add is that it does not cool worth a darn. I live in Vancouver, BC - not exactly the AZ desert, and it couldn't cool a small with the outside temperature at 85 F if its life depended on it. And it did...trashed it last week.

Ideal for rooms up to 400 square feet, this portable air conditioner delivers a 12,000-BTU cooling capacity and an energy-efficiency rating of 12.44. It also functions as a dehumidifier, removing up to 65 pints of moisture from the air per day (the dehumidifier operates automatically in AC mode). During the cooling process, its self-evaporating system extracts water from the air into the unit. Most of this water then gets recycled and used to cool the cooling coils for more efficient operation. The air conditioner comes equipped with a 3-1/5-pint water tank and two fan speeds, as well as a digital thermostat with remote control, which makes it simple to use. Choose between continuous operation or the programmable timer, which can be preset up to 12 hours. The unit also provides a 64- to 90-degree F thermostat, a washable air filter, an activated carbon filter to help remove odor, a built-in water tank or extended water tube for continuous drainage, and an easy-grip handle and large casters for convenient mobility. Other highlights include an LCDI plug, fire-resistant PVC plastic housing, a rotary compressor, directional air discharge louvers, and an extendable exhaust hose (up to 5 feet). The unit requires exhaust hose installation, and all standard accessories come included. Weighing 70 pounds, the air conditioner measures 17 by 17 by 30 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Soleus Portable Air Conditioner with 12,500 BTU Heater - 13,000 BTU, 225 CFM, Model# PH5-13R-35D

(More customer reviews)
We bought this unit 6 months ago to try and cool our 2nd floor (3 rooms). I set the unit to 70 degrees and it would constantly freeze up (meaning, ice would form after about 1 hour). I noticed that the unit drew more air in than it blew into the room. Giving the unit the benefit, I sealed everything in the room as tight as I could (insulating, foaming, etc) and closed off the other 2 rooms. It managed to cool that one room (12 x 16) but still would ice over on days of 100+ degrees (unit set for 70 degrees).
Heat pump: I turned it on in mid October. Today (December 10th), all of the lights on the front panel were blinking on and off and the unit would not turn off using the control panel power button. I unplugged it from the wall and left it sit for an hour. Plugging it back in (an hour later), the unit would run but all of the lights were flashing on and off with no control over the power.
[...]
I am awaiting customer service to contact me to see how they will react to the 1 year warranty. I will try to post what has happened to keep consumers informed.

It was not at all what I thought it would be, it was mis-represented to look like a wooden handle on the screen and it is all plastic.I will have to find another one of better quality, this is to cheaply made. Not made for long live and derability. I think the company has soom good products you are better off buying a better tool.

I spent $800 on this unit and it does not expel anything close to cold air. It is more like a fan than air conditioner. The dealer exchanged the first unit. But the second unit also turned out to be useless. I called Friedrich and they told me to pay to have it serviced. Friedrich is a rip-off. They charge double what other, better manufacturers charge. My neighbor also had a problem with it.
I purchased a Gibson for the other room for half the price. It is excellent: http://www.amazon.com/000-BTU-Thru-wall-220/dp/B002AQA7U0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1274915409&sr=8-1

Haier 12,000 Portable Air Conditioner Review

Haier 12,000 Portable Air Conditioner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have two of the Haier 12,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioners, each with a heater and three speeds. Have been using them for three seasons and really like them. It takes less than 15 minutes to snap hoses on connectors, place in window, add foam strip to prevent air & bugs from coming in. No heavy lifting! I suggest putting some no odor silicone spray [food grade from Amazon or Grainger Industrial Supply] or Armor All which has some silicone in it, on the parts that snap together. It makes it easier next season to put on and remove the hoses too. Also, run a bead of silicone sealant around the tiny space between the hose connector that fits into window adapter. No air or bugs can get in that way. I'm writing almost everything that isn't in the owner's manual.
Fortunately there are two collapsible 5 ft (1.5 M) tubes/hoses--one for air intake and one for heat & humidity exhaust. Note: one tube portable ac units are much less efficient than this Haier and draw hot, outside air in thru cracks or openings somewhere in your home or apartment. They also take longer to cool than this two hose ac. Haier did it right with this product. One improvement needed is a 24 hour timer instead of the 12 hr one at present.
If it is very humid often (59% INside!) this Haier unit may occasionally require draining from a plug in the back near the bottom into a flat pan. I usually wheel the unit on its easily movable casters to the top of stairs; then, put a pan on the next step down; untwist the drain plug and let the water fill the pan. Otherwise, you need to use a flat, two inch high pan to collect the water. Although we have 88%+ humidity here in the Northeast, my draining of the water has been usually limited to at the end of the season. Some humidity does blow out the exhaust hose. One thing: the window adapter fits windows up to 36 inches. One of my windows is 38" which means I have to fill in the extra space with cardboard or foam. The D.I.Y.'er might get some longer plastic, heat-bend it and make it fit better. We have double-hung windows (lift up &/or pull top one down) with screens & storm windows (insulates somewhat in winter). I set the window adapter with snap-on/off hoses to blow through the screen. It adds some security as the storm window is locked in place above the screen opening. You should put a bolt locking device (see locksmith or hardware store) above or beside the opening to prevent a thief from opening your window from the outside. It should be instantly openable in case of fire and need to escape.
Don't expect a portable AC to do as well as an in the window or wall unit. 12,000 btu portable AC = about 8,000 btu in a window/wall Air Conditioner (by experience). And, it will not get as cold. Although I measured the temperature (digitally) coming out of the unit at 61 degrees F (16 degrees C) it will not make the air in the room as cold as a regular air conditioner. The heater setting for the cooler or cold winter isn't worth the money. Better is a $20.00 ceramic heater with fan from one of the stores or Amazon. I don't use the built-in heater as it doesn't produce much heat and is noisier than the ceramic one. The unit has a setting to use alone as a dehumidifier, However, a separate 40+ pint (19+ liter) a day dehumidifier is a better choice. I use one of those in our basement with a 15 foot garden hose attached to the drain plug. Without a dehumidifier things get mildew, smelly and moldy with 70% humidity. A word to the wise!
If you live in some dry areas of the country, a "Swamp Cooler" (love that name) is the item for you. It cools by evaporation of water and adds the humidity to the air. Others may prefer a central air conditioner with the addition of an in-room humidifier for those desert areas of the country. Remember that a humidifier in the winter (used October thru May, in Northeast USA) prevents dry & cracked skin, cracked wooden furniture, needless coughing. And, if you get a cold/flu or pneumonia, it makes it much easier on your lungs, pain, energy [coughing lowers energy], let alone skin. A humidifier even helps keep a piano in tune longer. Add a air purifier with fan & filter for best results. Those ozone units are bad for your health; but, that is another review to write! The Haier remote works fine, although its buttons aren't clearly labeled as to what each does. Save your owner's manual in a zip bag. At the end of the season remove the hoses and cover your Haier with a large plastic bag to keep the dust off/out. Hope that helps you.

DeLonghi PAC C120 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Review

DeLonghi PAC C120 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although heavy and probably larger than a window air conditioner, this unit is worth every penny. I have a home office with a server and a couple PCs in it and this unit keeps the room as cold as I want it! I have central air - but my office always seemed stuffy. Now the entire upstairs loft is as cool and comfortable as the rest of the house. The unit vents outside - and even with my sliding windows, the venting area is narrow and does not obstruct my view. It can also be vented directly through the wall, but that seemed a little extreme to me. It is probably as loud as a window unit and has a fan only mode and a de-humidifier mode. The temperature is set by degrees, not some dumb low-medium-high setting. It plugs into a normal household plug and could be moved to another area of the house with little trouble. I am thinking, if the power went out, this unit could be used with the generator, we would not cook like the last time we lost power in the summer.

With a cooling capacity of 12,000 BTUs, this portable air conditioner means any room of the house can stay comfortably cool in the summer months. The unit's durable indoor/outdoor castor wheels and built-in side carry handles make it simple to transport from the living room during the day to the bedroom at night, while its easy-to-use electronic controls and LCD display ensure effortless operation. Choose from an automatic fan function or three fan speeds, depending on the personal comfort level desired. It also provides a dehumidifying mode to help reduce excess moisture in the air and a fan-only mode for air circulation without cooling. Other highlights include quiet operation thanks to its high-efficiency compressor and components, an adjustable thermostat with a 24-hour programmable timer for energy savings, air filtration to promote cleaner indoor air, and dripless operation, which means no bucket to empty. A full-function LCD remote control comes included, as well as a window bracket and exhaust hose for easy installation with no tools required. Amana APO77R 7000-BTU Portable Electronic Air Conditioner Review

Amana APO77R 7000-BTU Portable Electronic Air Conditioner
Average Reviews:

As a previous poster noted, Amana does not acknowledge the existence of these rebadged Haier units on its site. Unfortunately, Haier also does not seem to acknowledge them, making support put-near impossible. The a/c unit does require a small window (or a large one largely blocked off) which can take some work if your windows are not the right size, but that's true of any unit like these. It is a very handy unit, without the need to empty buckets. It is also fairly noisy, with odd controls that require the remote. It was great the first year we had it, less so the second despite careful storage. You'd probably do better with a domestic-production (or European, or Japanese) unit if you can find one.

With a cooling capacity of 7,000 BTU's per hour, this portable air conditioner quickly and efficiently cools rooms up to 160 square feet. The unit features user-friendly electronic controls and a full-function remote control, which makes it easy to adjust the settings from across the room. Choose from three cool settings and three fan settings. The unit can also be used to dehumidify the air, and its self-evaporating system allows for continuous use. In addition, by setting the 24-hour on/off timer, the air conditioner will run only when it's needed--set it to start cooling right before you get home from work, for example. The unit offers an energy-efficiency rating of 8.2, and its ultra-quiet operation makes it a nice choice for a bedroom or home office. Other highlights include multi-directional continuous airflow, an easy-access air filter, and portable casters for smooth transport from one location to another. UEI THL1 Temperature / Humidity Data Logger Review

UEI THL1 Temperature / Humidity Data Logger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The data logger requires the pc driver and software. I could only get it to work on Windows XP 32-bit. I spent a few hours trying to get it to work on a Win7 64-bit system to no avail, including downloading the developer's kit, trying to fool the software, etc. On the plus side, if you have Windows 7 Professional and are running XP mode, you can run it in this environment.
The device is not readable unless you have the desktop software and driver installed., and cannot be "armed" without the software either. That said, once you've armed it and collected data, the software works flawlessly, and allows you to view a graph of temperatures etc., and you can export them to a variety of formats.
Some things I've done with it: Verify refrigeration is at correct temperature, measure night-time temperature swings, monitor a server room to see if overheating is a problem, monitor summertime garage temperatures with and without a fan running to measure cooling effectiveness over time. Possibilities are endless.
