(More customer reviews)The data logger requires the pc driver and software. I could only get it to work on Windows XP 32-bit. I spent a few hours trying to get it to work on a Win7 64-bit system to no avail, including downloading the developer's kit, trying to fool the software, etc. On the plus side, if you have Windows 7 Professional and are running XP mode, you can run it in this environment.
The device is not readable unless you have the desktop software and driver installed., and cannot be "armed" without the software either. That said, once you've armed it and collected data, the software works flawlessly, and allows you to view a graph of temperatures etc., and you can export them to a variety of formats.
Some things I've done with it: Verify refrigeration is at correct temperature, measure night-time temperature swings, monitor a server room to see if overheating is a problem, monitor summertime garage temperatures with and without a fan running to measure cooling effectiveness over time. Possibilities are endless.
