Strobe Wireless Security System Review

Strobe Wireless Security System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We bought this security system about 6 months ago to work in conjunction with our other security system. I really like having a motion sensor that I can set at night that would detect any motion without being too sensitive. I love that it has a battery backup option in case the power goes out it still does its job. I feel safe with my Strobe Wireless Security System. The few times I have accidentally set it off it without a doubt delivered the most ear piercing alarm and strobe feature.

Protector Plus Wireless Voice Dialer Security System Review

Protector Plus Wireless Voice Dialer Security System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although I have looked at X-10 products in the past, I never purchased any because I thought the quality would be poor. When I purchased this system, I did not know it was an X-10 product, and I probably would not have considered buying it if it had been advertised as such. However, after everything was installed, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised.
This package, as it comes to your door, is comprehensive enough to provide very good house coverage. I am impressed with the total number of accessories provided. The console has a built in horn. An additional small powerhorn is included in the package. Both horns, however, just didn't have enough 'ooomph' as far as I was concerned. I added three additional large powerhorns, two more rocket lamp modules, and two more motion detectors to the system. Everything works without a hitch. The five horns literally make it unbearable to remain in the house. Five lights flash on and off when the alarm sounds also. In addition to this, the console will dial up to four phone numbers and play a recorded message to the person(s) it calls. The person is also given the option to press a number and 'listen in' to the home to try and determine if there really is a problem. I was concerned that if someone decided to simply break a window glass, they could get into the house without sounding the alarm by sliding the window up and breaking the magnetic contacts. The four motion detectors take care of that problem. Each motion detector can be set to sound the alarm after detecting one movement or two movements (to cut down on false alarms). And, you can set the remote control to arm the doors and windows - without arming the motion detectors - while you are home. That way you can move freely throughout the house without setting off the alarm. When you leave the house, you can also set the alarm to 'arm' everything including the motion detectors. The motion detectors have an approximate 40' range. You can have a total of up to 16 motion detectors, or door/window sensors, or up to 8 keychain remotes, or up to 8 handheld security remotes, OR any combination of these up to 16 total. I don't know for sure, but it seems like you can add any number of horns or lamp modules (for flashing the lights).
Be advised that it does take a little time to install if you decide to put in all the door/window sensors. You also need to buy a LOT of alkaline AA and AAA batteries.
My finished system has four motion detectors, nine window/door sensors, two keychain remotes, one security remote. This is a total of 16 items that are keyed into the console. In addition, there are five horns, including the one built into the console and five light modules. We have approximately 4,000 sq. ft. of room. The console is centrally located. There is no problem with it 'reaching' the sensors. The furthest sensor from my console is about 60 feet away. As an added benefit, every sensor 'checks in' with the console every 90 minutes. If there is a problem (such as low battery), the appropriate zoned light on the console will flash. The console also has a battery backup to retain information and allow limited alarm use. Out of the box, this system is very similar to what our apartment complex installed in all the individual apartments when I was living in the city. It really is a good system.

Ultra 57002/57000 Nickel Patio Door Security Night Lock Pin Review

Ultra 57002/57000 Nickel Patio Door Security Night Lock Pin
Average Reviews:

This is one of the simplest, cheapest, and most effective locks for sliding exterior doors, sliding interior closet doors (such as for baby proofing) and many types of sliding windows.
For external security it prevents the door (or window) from being pryed open, as well as from being lifted out. It is very easy to install, all you need is a drill.
I actually couldn't find this lock at our local home depot, which is why I bought it on Amazon.
I just wish it came in brass.

Logitech WiLife Digital Video Security--Hidden Master System Camera Review

Logitech WiLife Digital Video Security--Hidden Master System Camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are three sets that are nearly identical, and differ only in the type of camera: this one (hidden camera), the outdoor starter kit, and the indoor starter kid. for more comprehensive reviews, look at those other kits as well.
As for my opinion, this set does what it says it does in a pretty seamless fashion: you install the software, plug the camera into the wall, plug a USB adapter into the wall and your computer, make some minor configuration changes and you are all set. I have no doubt we could have gotten a better system cheaper but not one as seamlessly integrated.
We looked at many different systems and bought this one instead because:
- most spy cams broadcast for TV...you then need a TV/VCR to record, or a separately purchased adapter to make it work with your computer, and we weren't technically confident enough to want to buy different pieces and figure out how to get them working together
- some spy cams are self-recording (they contain memory internally) but these tend to be pricey AND they limit how much you can record; they will fill up if you don't clear them out regularly, and for our purposes that wasn't practical
- most "wireless" spy cams work on a WiFi wireless network, which is great if you have one, but we wanted this for use in a place we didn't have wifi; this one works by transmitting over your home or office electrical system.
- the cost of the system includes a website you can set up to view your camera remotely (although if you have a firewall you'll only be able to watch 3 minute pieces; if the system can connect directly, which might require configuring your router which some people will find daunting, you can watch constantly). So, that said, here are some cons:
- only works on PCs, not macs
- 95% of the configuration is a piece of cake, but some aspects are confusing, like how to schedule alerts, and setting up for emailing alerts
- the program has many features that are in the program but you can't click on them -- they are there as advertisements for a "platinum" version of the software that costs $80 a year. It's annoying to have a screen full of buttons you aren't able to click, and to have advertising be such a prevalent portion of the interface
- this one is kind of petty, but it would be nice of the clock that hides the camera had an alarm, since we had to remove a "real" clock in place of this one
- the camera is fine for security, but the image is kind of strange - it appears to be infrared? Which means the colors are bizarre. Reds turn yellow, greens and blues turn white. Which is probably fine for security purposes, but don't be expecting to get a high quality video out of it

Easy to install if you already have a peephole viewer. All yor need is a screwdriver. The picture is clear, but depends on the light outside your door. We find it most helpful at night, as we have a light directly overhead.
You can save money by going on-line. Several catalogs carry it but charge more.

Brinno PHV132512 Electronic PeepHole Viewer Review

Brinno PHV132512 Electronic PeepHole Viewer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The setup was incredibly simple, exactly as shown in video. I'm a 53 yo woman with absolutely NO handy-man skills whatsoever, and if I could install it in 5 minutes, anyone could!
I've only had it one day, so can't attest to the longevity of this product yet, but I've had the opportunity to view it both at day and night (with porch light on). The picture is very good, in color, and the zoom lets me zoom into the area that's about 25 yards in front of it. It works PRECISELY as described, and I feel 10 times more secure about seeing who is at my door than I did with the standard, crappy peephole. I can see the picture on the screen even when standing 10 feet away from the door -- except you need to walk up to the door to press the button to turn it on.
The only thing that I don't like is when you push the button, it makes a slight click noise, and I'm not sure if someone outside the door could hear that -- probably not, but it should have been designed with totally silent operation.
The only other suggestion I have would be to have a remote so you could turn it on remotely without even having to walk up to the door. Other than those two things (and believe me, the pros of this viewer FAR OUTWEIGH those puny issues), I am absolutely satisfied (on day one) with this viewer.
You must have the porchlight on to see anything at night. With the porchlight off, the screen is totally black - so it does need light. However, with the porchlight on, the view close up to my door is spectacular. The view out away from the door, where the area is dark, is zero at night -- but you can see perfectly who is at your door with a light on.
If the batteries run low, it's easy to turn the viewer and it comes off to change the batteries. Even without the viewer in place, you can still see through the peephole, as with a standard peephole viewer - so if you run out of batteries, you are not left without a view until you can buy more batteries - simply remove the viewer, and use it as a standard peephole. Even without the viewer, the range is much broader and clear than a standard peephole.
From the outside, it looks just like a regular peephole, except the person on the outside can NOT tell when you are looking because there is always something over the hole (the viewer). With standard peepholes, the person outside can tell when you move up close to look out, but not with this one.
The viewer remains on for a few seconds after you turn it on, and if you want it on longer, simply keep pressing it between zoom and regular mode. I like it that it turns off after about 5 seconds, as that's really all you normally need, and it saves on the batteries.
I like to use it to "just look out there" if I hear something, and want to see what's going on without opening the door -- so it's not only good when someone rings your bell, but also to just keep an occasional eye on what's occuring "out there" in front of your door and beyond, as well a broad view on each side.
I am totally pleased, and would highly recommend this viewer to anyone who really needs to see who is outside, without letting the visitor know you are looking -- and who needs to have a broader view. Great purhcase -- one of my favorites in a long, long time!

LaserShield BSK-0013101 Home Security System Review

LaserShield BSK-0013101 Home Security System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read the ad and purchased the system through Costco since they have a rep for an excellent price/value relationship.
Rating the unit-
Set-up = A. easy to read and follow instructions
Components = D.
a).Transmitters are physically large in relation to their function/operation. They are easy to spot by intuders.
b). base station. Alarm signal is loud enough to be a
nuisance. Perhaps it was designed to incapacitate intruders through laughter.
c). Sensitivity = F
I placed the 2 sensors in logical locations and "broke into" my own house with the system armed. I assumed that the intruder would come during the day. Any intruder with half a brain would see the sensors - they have a big red LED on the front.
Sadly, I was able to get by the sensors and gain access to all of the house by using very slow deliberate movements. It bears mentioning that I am 6'5" 250 lbs and that I moved within 5' of the front of one of the sensors without setting off the alarm.
Once I had decided to return the unit, I started moving more naturally to see what the threshold was for me to be detected.
I was not impressed, to say the least.
It is true that it would be hard to leave the house carrying
a TV or a sofa but intruders easily could have walked off with small valuables /jewelry/cash. In fact, without installation of a third sensor they could have opened the garage door and carried 1/2 of the first floor.
Unless your prospective intruders are remarkably clumsy, or ride (remarkably clumsy) elephants, there is no way this system would detect them.

LTS LTD08HTDK 8-Camera H.264 Realtime DVR Security System with 500GB, Mobile Phone Live View, VGA output
I searched around for a fairly decent surveilance system with a limited budget. I thought this was it. But, I soon discovered not everything is what it's cut out to be. When I received this system, I read over the box, before opening it to see if everything matched the description on Amazon.com. It looked good, then I opened the box and soon began to be disappointed. The packaging looks great, everything nice and clean, but I soon discovered the camera base & mount bracket were not the same as that pictured with the description! Then I started reading the manuals and looking at schematics provided, to find that the description is misleading in its portrail of what this system can do and how it does it, and customer service from the manufacturer is extremely disappointing. The company that provides this product has poor customer service, the sales staff does not know what they are doing or saying. The technical support is non-existent...you get a message to leave a call back number--they'll get in touch with you!???? What kind of technical support is that? If you do get lucky to talk with a tech, you quickly learn you made a bad choice--at least I did!
This 8-channel system only records in CIF--but you don't know that until you get the package! It boasts a Sony CCT camera, but it is only a analog camera with a Sony chip inside--no way to know for sure. The camera mounting bracket and base are cheap...it's not adjustable like shown in the description--it's a 5" tube with a base; and the length of the camera cables is shorter that the length of the mounting bracket with base, thus leaving the BNC connecters exposed and vulnerable to theft or disconnect/damage by any intruder. This system may be what others tout it to be, but my experience has been terrible and I would not recommend this item to anyone! Sorry Amazon.com, but this item did not live up to your reputation!

Logitech Alert 750i Indoor Master - HD-quality Security System(961-000329) Review

Logitech Alert 750i Indoor Master - HD-quality Security System(961-000329)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been trying to set up a remote monitoring system for a while now, and have experimented with a few different solutions including webcams and other stand-alone cameras. The same problems problems occur over and over:
- When the router gets rebooted, invariably you can't connect to the camera without going back and fixing some part of the configuration.
- Remote viewing through dynamic IP addresses is flaky, and many DDNS solutions don't work very well. And do you really want a static IP address just for this?
- You need a computer switched on near the camera, or a web-server that the camera can stream to. That's somewhat awkward.
- The image quality is so-so, and tends to be good enough to see a person entering a room, but hard to identify who it is.
I'm pleased to say that the Logitech Alert system beats any of the others I've tried hands-down, and it's clearly designed with absolute simplicity in mind, together with the need to connect with the camera system remotely without a degree in network engineering.
Everything is provided in the box, including various mounts, network cables and software. It took more time to individually unwrap each component than connect it together - the whole system was live in under 5 minutes. The software updates itself in seconds, and even setting up user accounts on their website took no time at all. In terms of positioning the camera, it's possible to place it on a stand, screwed to a wall, or attached to a window using the suction cup provided.
This package does several things (very) well:
- The software is extremely simple to use, yet offers some bells and whistles such as motion alerts by email, live recording and playback, and basic controls such as zoom. It's also written in English, and you'd be surprised how many other systems are not.
- It handles Internet disconnection gracefully with an on-board SD card, and doesn't need any user action to help it 'remember' any IP settings.
- Talking of IP settings, these are all under the hood so you can be blissfully unaware of how it works - which is such a major benefit that I'd buy this package for this alone.
- Viewing remotely through a desktop browser in another location is as simple as visiting the website and logging in.
- Viewing from a smartphone is even better. I used their free Android app, and the speed and quality surpassed my expectations.
- The audio broadcast is very clear.
- Adding additional cameras is straightforward, although you have to make sure your Internet bandwidth is capable of supporting the number of cameras you need.
- You can switch off the LED lights that might give away the location of the unit - what a nice touch.
But this package is NOT:
- A completely wireless solution: the camera connects to an outlet unit and communicates to your router with another outlet unit. Although wiring is really minimal, there is always the one cable needed on the camera side.
- A replacement for a multi-camera professional system - though it comes close, and for a fraction of the price might suffice for some commercial users.
- A way to spy on your neighbor's license plates across the road - why would you anyway?
Still, even with those caveats it's a remarkably good solution if you want to view a location remotely with a minimum of hassle.

GE 51207 Smart Home Wireless Motion Sensor Alarm Review

GE 51207 Smart Home Wireless Motion Sensor Alarm
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently purchased two of these motion detector alarms. I had a few questions before purchasing that the other reviewers hadn't answered. I'll try to give a complete review to help others who might be considering the purchase.
The units feel a bit cheap, but they do work as described. They have two operating modes: chime and alarm - controlled by a tiny switch on the side of the remote. The chim mode sounds a doorbell like chime (fairly loud) when someone moves across the beam. The alarm has a 45 second exit and 30 second entry time. Many people obviously want a shorter entry time, fearing that a burglar would have too much time to get into the house.
A couple minor operating points. When the alarm is first tripped starting the 30 second countdown, it sounds a single loud beep. That can be good or bad. It might alert you, but it also alerts the intruder - perhaps allowing him time to disable the alarm before it sounds. When the alarm finally does go off, hold you ears because it's quite loud at 120dB.
The remote uses a small watch type battery that is included. The remote is very simple to operate with "enable" and "disable" buttons. The motion sensor itself takes 3AA batteries that are not included. The units come with a plastic swivel wall-mount bracket, screws, and sheetrock inserts. The motion sensors will not sit flat on a table, because their bases are rounded.
The manufacturer apparently has a problem with quality control. As other reviewers have pointed out, there is a problem with the screw holding on the battery compartment. I bought two units and the screw on one unit was crossthreaded into the plastic and impossible to remove without stripping the head. The screw on the second unit came right out without any problem. I've since exchanged the first unit.
I hope this answers any remaining questions. If not, please feel free to ask me.
Please be kind enough to indicate if reviews are helpful.

International Pro Source, Inc. Patio Door Security Bar Review

International Pro Source, Inc. Patio Door Security Bar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pro:
-Price!!!
-Comes with all the hardware required for a typical patio door
-Can't be "jimmied" open, small "peg" or "pin" that looks like a key holds it in place. There's a small chain that keeps the "peg/pin" near point of use so that you don't lose it.
-Same feature which makes it "jimmy-proof" also makes it impossible for our 18-month old son to pull it out and play with it, defeating the security (our son can pull out other "charlie" bars but not this one).
-Bar folds up of the way (like a drawbridge) without having to put it someplace out of the way like other bars
-Better than both the piece of oak and the removable charlie bars that we were using
-Comes with a little black rubber cap so that when you cut to size it does not have a raw/sharp/unfinished-looking end
-Looks similar to bars used on the TV show "It Takes a Thief"
Con:
-Aluminum bar is easy to scratch, be careful when cutting it to size
-The bar can be a little hard to pull out once in the up position, suggest mounting it about a 1/3 of the way from the floor. In this way, the tip/top/end of the bar is easy to pull down and resecure. An added bonus of this is that this also guarantees that there's enough clearance to fold it up in the first place.
-Wish it was painted or anodized in different colors. Aluminum is hard to paint and looks a little unfinished. The bar is silver in color.
-Cheap screws. One sheared in half during install (but there was an extra one in the bag and we also have a big tin of them).
Neutral:
-Tools I used: hacksaw, phillips screwdriver, slotted screwdriver, level, drill, drill bit, vice clamp, tape measure, sharpie marker (to mark screw location), and metal file.
-If you have certain kinds of self-closing patio doors, for a pool for example, you might have issues that you'll need to work around/consider (we did, but were able to successfully work around it) as you need to drill into both the door and frame.
-Not very beefy, but does not need to be
Bottom Line: Works well, recommended. What it lacks in beauty, it makes up in functionality and price. Will work best combined with other home security devices (home alarm, key cabinet, etc.).

Q-See QS408-803-5 Precision Recording Security System with 8 Indoor/Outdoor CCD Cameras and Pre-Installed 500GB Hard Drive Review

Q-See QS408-803-5 Precision Recording Security System with 8 Indoor/Outdoor CCD Cameras and Pre-Installed 500GB Hard Drive
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought my first q-see DVR (digital video recorder) about 3 years ago right here on amazon.com. It was known as a "PENTAPLEX" which meant you could do 5 things at the same time - record live video from multiple channels, backup the hard disk, view video remotely over the internet, view video locally on a TV set, and search through recordings to find out who took your recycle bin full of cans. Pentaplex and Triplex are names given as to how many activities the unit can do simultaneously.
That unit is still running after driving the neighborhood drug dealers out of their rent free abandoned home (and having them arrested numerous times - it povided key evidence of license plate numbers, video of drug deals going down, spousal abuse -- you name it the police department got it. For that matter the PD could log in over the internet to check up on who was there if they wanted to)
I live on a 2 block long road full of modern quiet 4500 sq ft homes, and across from me was a 60 year old 931 sq ft original house that had become the neighborhood drug hangout - a place to go smoke a bowl, ride your motorcycle through the front door of the house and out the back, to hook up with the homies, etc. It definitely did not fit in - the crime rate rose - the house adjacent to the drug house was robbed 5 times in 3 months. Both me and my next door neighbor installed MONITORED alarms and we formed our own neighborhood watch. His was a .357 and mine was a 9mm.
The Q-see was instrumental in getting rid of the trash. It provided numerous photographic enlargements of license plates, video evidence used in court to convict the individual squatting there, and more 30 second drive by drug deals than I could count, happening every 3-5 minutes right in front of my house.
I installed 8 cameras covering every angle possible, 2 PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom - like the casino's use) domes that I could controll remotely over the internet to see what is going on if I was not home, and motion detectors, microphones - all of this was OVERT meaning it was blatant that you were on camera if you came nearby - I had to put up a sign because legally I could not record voice without notifying the people (video is OK) due to wiretapping laws that are outdated, so I put my sign on the 60 year old tree in front of my house warning people they were under video and audio surveilance. In 3 months we had the dealers out, the rightful owners back, they had to demolish the house because it was so badly damaged, and then they built a brand new 4500 sq ft home in keeping with the neighborhood.
About Q-see
Q-see brings the $12,000 DVR that the casinos use to catch card cheats down to the price a homeowner can afford. I recommend any home first install a MONITORED alarm system and make it BLATANT that one is in place (big bell box outside in a conspicuous place) - this will rid yourself of 90% of the crime because criminals know where to look for these and when they find them, they walk on to your neighbor's house to rob instead. After an alarm comes video evidence of WHO did WHAT and WHEN with PROOF. Q-see gives you this.
What do all the numbers mean? What is H.264?
When dealing with video (which is inherently analog) and you go to digitize it, you would normally find yourself swamped in data, because video is 30 pictures per second, each 740x480, full color (or b&W at night with IR vision cameras). Imagine a 1.3 megapixel camera taking 30 pictures per second - your memory card would be full in a couple minutes at the most.
The broadcast industry faced the same problem when the FCC mandated that they "go digital" recently - there was not enough room on a channel to put raw high definition television. So they did what we do on our PCs when we have a bunch of files - they compressed them. This process is known as coding and decoding and is abbreviated CODEC for those of us who dont like to type alot. MANY codecs exist - divx, h.264, h.263, mjpeg, etc. H.264 however crams the best quality picture into the smallest amount of disk space. It's used by the satellite providers to give you more channels than they could without it. Best of all, it's free. No royalties to pay.
You're going to hear alot about frames per second. 1 video channel is 30 frames per second. That's for one camera. If you have 8 cameras, then it 8 times 30 or 240 frames per second that your 8 camera DVR must record (if you want smooth free flowing video like you are accustomed to on TV) - now you don't need free flowing video - you can cut from 30 to 15 frames per second and still get reasonably smooth video. The point is that any DVR has a limit as to how many FPS (Frames per Second) it can record. You get to decide which cameras get the best picture, and which ones only take 2 pictures per second (as an example) if you do not have 240 frames per second.
The second number to throw at you is resolution. VGA is 640x480 and is about VHS quality. HD is 1920x1080 and will blow your mind after being accustomed to VGA quality video (blu ray is done in HD as an example) In the world of surveilance video - the more pixels you choose to record, the less time you can record on a disk. So they invented QVGA - which stands for quarter vga - they divide a VGA screen into 1/4ths and you are left with 320x240. That's cell phone size video - and when you see it blown up onto a big screen tv set it looks pretty bad. Another standard is CIF which is 352x288 pixels - better than qvga, but not as good as VGA (about VHS or the old video standard).
What I like about this product is you can configure how much quality you assign from the product's ability to record to each camera. That way the cameras for areas where people are standing (front door for example) take 3 frames per second of CIF or VGA quality video. The cameras that cover high speeed motion - the street with cars zooming by or the sidewalk with bicycles, they can record at 30 frames per second for smooth video. Again - for 8 channels you need 240 frames per second to record all 8 channels at full framerate (30 FPS).
The good news!
The 408 from q-see supports 240 frames per second, so every camera can have full motion video. Cameras 1 and 2 are special though, as they are sampled at a higher resolution called D1 or 702x408 pixels (sure beats CIF) while cameras 3-8 are recorded at CIF resolution. I've been getting by on JUST CIF for 3 years, so this is a step up!
Can I Install it? Is it legal?
I am not an attorney, so this is not legal advice, but from what I found on the net, you can record video of your property without giving notice. However, this product can also record audio. To do that you must put up a sign in a conspicuous place that tells passers by that video and audio surveilance is in use - then you are compliant with all the laws.
Can you install it - probably if you can wire an 8 track player into your 1977 buick. Here's what you need to know.
1 - everything you will need is on amazon.
2 - I've reviewed most of it so read my reviews
3 - my email is in my profile so if you get stuck email me
4 - every camera needs 2 things - a video connection and 12 volts to run the camera. x 8 cameras and you will want a 12 volt power panel like the one I reveiwed here: Q-See QS1018 12 Volt 12 AMP Power Distribution Panel Connects 18 Cameras
5 - should you decide to record audio, you will need 1 - a microphone for each channel (8 of them) 2 - a mic to line level amplifier (about $20) 3 - some microphone cable. This gets into recording gear - the sennheiser C2 is a good deal since you get 2 mics in a set, 4 sets would get you 8 mics, and they are very sensitive - able to hear a whisper at 100 feet. But they need preamps. ART Tube MP Microphone Preamp Here's just one example - it will only handle one microphone, and costs more than the mic, so you might look around for 8 channel preamps beause the microphone needs 48V to run itself, and it gives you a very low level output on a XLR connector (3pin pro stuff) - and you need to amplify that .007 volt signal to about .700 volts (100x or 20dB for those who speak dB) to run the line level inputs of the 408. Of course you could opt to just have 2 microphones.
6 - what's this I hear about night vision - it it that expensive military stuff? No. How night vision works is when the sun goes down a sensor tells the camera to turn on a whole bunch of IR LEDs (infrared light emitting diodes) - these look to have a dull red glow to you, but 36 of them shining into your front yard is like a 1000W light turned on. Best part is the subject walking through can't tell - the infrared spectrum is beyond what us humans can see - so it still looks dark, except on your camera, where although its black and white, it is fully detailed with facial recognition possible.
7 - How about motion detection - can these replace those alarm motion sensors. The answer is: it depends. Inside, I'd say yes, but outside, I'd say no. The reason is that IR is not visable to HUMANS, but BUGS love the stuff, especially spiders who spin webs over your camera lenses where it's nice and bright at night. And that spider will trigger any motion detector - even if you kill off all the spiders, the number of flying insects that love IR light is amazing. Every night I capture about 50-80 bugs flying through a motion capture zone.
8 - what is a motion capture zone? Your camera brings back a big area - as much as the lens lets it see - but you may not want to capture the entire area, just a sub...Read more›

The weather-resistant Silent Alert easily mounts outdoors and is powered by two 'AA' batteries (not included).
Choice Alert components offer expandability for complete home protection. Note: This product must be used with the GE 45129 Wireless Control Center or with the GE 45142 Wireless Control Center Starter Kit (each sold separately). The GE 45137 Silent Alert can work alongside other wireless Choice Alert components as part of a GE Choice Alert Wireless Alarm System.
Part of the GE Choice Alert Wireless Alarm SystemThe GE 45137 Silent Alert is part of the GE Choice Alert Wireless Alarm System line of products. Cost-effective and easy to install, Choice Alert components offer wireless operation, multi-zone coverage, home and away settings, all-weather function, and expandability for complete home protection.
With wireless capabilities, Choice Alert products require no complicated wiring, drilling or expensive installation costs. And because they are designed to be part of a self-contained system, there are no monthly usage charges. System components are simple enough for anyone to use, and they can be combined to provide a customized blanket of protection over your entire property.

Wireless Control Center for Device MonitoringThe entire Choice Alert Security System is designed around the Wireless Control Center, the system's hub. The Control Center monitors every sensor that is wirelessly connected to it. As many as four sensors can be programmed in each of four zones, giving you the security of up to 16 devices to guard your entire home, including sensors for doors, windows, gates, water leaks, and motion detection.
The Wireless Control Center allows you to secure your system with a custom four-digit code that can be changed at any time. Plus, the center lets you control many system features. For example, you can select 'Home' mode for an instant alarm and 'Away' mode for a delayed alarm. In addition to the armed alarm system, the Control Center also offers a visible and audible Zone Notification alert system (with a choice of continuous alert or single chime mode) and a dedicated alert zone (Zone 4). The center wirelessly transmits and receives signals up to 150 feet.
Additionally, the Wireless Control Center features a low-battery indicator that will alert you when battery power is low in a specific zone, so you'll know exactly when to replace the batteries in every one of your components.
Combine Components for Total Home CoverageTo complement the Silent Alert, there are several components available for use with the Wireless Control Center, including a door/window sensor, a motion detector, a water leak sensor, a secondary audio alarm siren, a garage door sensor, and a signal repeater (for enhanced wireless range). Add up to 16 sensors and give yourself the peace of mind that only complete home protection can provide.
An Extra Level of Security to Keep You and Your Family SafeThe Silent Alert lets you know whether or not your Choice Alert Alarm System has been compromised--before you enter your home. This advanced warning will help prevent you and your family from potentially walking in on a dangerous intruder. Simply mount the Silent Alert in a hidden place--outside your front door, along the edge of a window, in your garage, or any other discreet area that only you and your family know about. Flashing LEDs will signal whether or not security has been breached while you were away, and the LEDs will continue to flash until the Silent Alert is disarmed via the Wireless Control Center.
Installing the Silent Alert is a breeze. Simply use the included double-sided tape or screws to mount the device within 150 feet of the Wireless Control Center. The device is weather resistant, so you can mount it indoors or out. Add as many Silent Alerts to your Choice Alert Security System as you'd like; mount one near your front door, one near the rear entrance to your home, or one any other place where you want advanced warning. The device uses two 'AA' batteries (not included) for a battery life of up to 18 months, and it features a low-battery indicator that lets you know when to replace the batteries.
The GE 45137 Choice Alert Silent Alert is backed by a one-year limited warranty.

Zelco Lock Up Door Lock Review

Zelco Lock Up Door Lock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this for additional security for my own room in my apartment, and so far it's really easy to use and it's worked really well.
The black casing and the red handle are plastic, but the actual bar that you line up in the door frame is metal. So it seems sturdy so far. It's got these gears that hook when you move the handle, which keep the whole structure in place. It's *really* easy to use, and has the same effect as lining up something heavy to block the door right near the doorknob. It installs between the door and the door frame, right where the door knob catch lines up. You do have to put it in place and remove it every time you want to use it - it doesn't automatically attach to the door frame or anything. You can use it whether or not you have a deadbolt.
The only two issues I have with it are:
- I didn't see any information about which way it goes into the doorframe when I bought this, so I took a chance. It'll work correctly from your side of the door if you have to pull the door towards you in order to open it. If you have to push the door to open it, this lock won't work for you, because the installation needs to happen on the other side.
- Another thing to watch out for is the structure of your door frame, where the door handle or additional locks are, etc.. If you have an oddly shaped door frame (like it's really rounded, or heavily decorated or something), or a large door handle, you might have some difficulty getting this to work - the parts may not line up correctly, or the lock may not have anything to settle against. It works really well so far on standard door frames.
I say try it out anyway - chances are, you have a door where you can use it, and so far it's worked well.

Logitech Alert 700i Indoor Add-on HD-quality Security Camera Review

Logitech Alert 700i Indoor Add-on HD-quality Security Camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I try to keep up writing reviews for products I buy, especially the items that I myself do a lot of research on, before buying. So I'll break this down as best I can. I live in a 2-story, 2800 square foot home. And for the longest time, I've wanted a surveillance system to make me feel safe both when I am at home and away. The Logitech camera system and software does it right, with only a few minor issues, and I stress minor.
I have an Apple router but run Windows 7 on my PC; I'm also using the free application on my iPhone. I had zero problems with the software install, even when it came to Window's firewall. I'm currently running 2 indoor cameras and 1 outdoor camera...but, I actually plan on using nothing but outdoor cameras for my entire system (to include for inside surveillance). And that's about the only real issue I have with the system. The indoor camera works awesome and does what it should. It delivers good quality color video and even over the iPhone application or over the web (from Logitech's website), all of my friends all have said, "Wow, that looks awesome!" BUT, and it's a big BUT, once the sun goes down, the indoor cameras are very limited. Shy of the bad guy turning on all of the lights in my house, then committing his crime, the indoor camera is of little use during nighttime hours. And at first, I was okay with that because I'm home at night and it's actually the daytime when nobody is home. But then I bought the outdoor Logitech camera and WOW, what a difference because it holds the very same quality as the indoor camera, but also does a phenomenal job at night. So with that, I'm going to return the indoor cameras and use the outdoor cameras for outside as well as inside. But I still want to give my review on the indoor camera as I've been using it for about a month now.
Pros:
Color Quality. Again, great color quality. Even using the digital zoom, I was impressed at how good it looks. My wife being the glass half empty type of person commented that you can't see the face of the person all that well. But my reply was - but you can sure as heck see his race, clothing description, weight, height, hair color and most importantly you can see if he is or isn't wearing gloves...hence, you could see clearly where he may have left evidence (fingerprints, DNA, etc).
Included 2GB media card. This is a great feature!! This means that if bad guy breaks in and thinks he's outsmarting you by stealing your computer (with the footage of him), you can still revert back to the camera itself to retrieve the footage saved to the media card. Another great thing about the camera media card is that your home computer does not need to be always on to be recording. For example, my computer goes into sleep mode after about an hour of inactivity. So if my computer is in hibernate mode for a full day, the cameras are still recording footage and will sync to my computer when it awakes. For it to work seamless, I just leave the Logitech software running in the task bar (background).
Software. Logitech did it right with the software. It was a very easy install, features are clear and I love that you can customize each camera you have on your network. For example, out of the 3 cameras I have, I only want 1 of them to send off text message alerts. Again, it's nice that the alerts are not just a system feature, but rather an individual camera setting. You can also adjust the duration of alerts to save yourself from getting thousand texts. For me, a 5 minute window is perfect, just as long as I get the initial text, I wouldn't be concerned about getting 20 more in under a 5 minute or however long of a window you choose. I also like the way the software saves all of the recorded video. With 3 cameras going, I've been getting a lot of recorded footage. The software not only allows you to use choose a given date and time to research, but if you were to search out for that file in Windows explorer, the software does a great job by saving the footage under the name of camera (for example "Living Room"), then the month (10 for October), then the day within that month. Being a police officer, I really like that if I had to turn over crucial footage (if my home was burglarized, etc), all of the footage would have clear a folder structure and time stamp that would make sense to any other investigating officer.
Alerts. This feature sealed the deal for me buying this system to begin with. You select a zone in which if motion occurs, an alert will be sent. For example, although my camera has a pretty wide shot of my living room to include front door, my only concern is if movement is picked up at the front door. Once motion is detected, a text message is sent to my phone. The alert text message is awesome; it says what camera picked up what motion and at what date and time...simple and efficient. BUT, I will mention alerts in the Cons section, so please read on.
Camera size. Again, I have both the indoor and outside camera and was very impressed by how small they were. I also lucked out that I have power sources on top of my potter shelves, so I was able to plug in the cameras without any wires being run down walls, etc. And because the cameras are small, I've actually told friends that I have the cameras and it still took them a while to actually figure out where.
The "wow" factor. I'll admit it, I'm that guy who loves his tech toys, who loves showing off new technology and how I make it work for my family's safety. The first day when I showed all of my police friends the system, everyone was amazed. I should get a kick back from Logitech on all of the potential customers I made for them. Being able to open the iPhone app and show my friends that I have 24/7 surveillance of my home, felt very cool. The iPhone app also works very well over 3g cell service (not just wi-fi).
Cons:
Price. Well I mentioned the "wow" factor when I showed off the system to my friends. Well, I got the same expression when I told them how much. For me to get 6 cameras, all of them being the outdoor cameras, is a bit pricey. But, I will say that the software being free is nice. It's also nice to know that each camera comes with that 2GB media card (another plus that make the high costs seem understandable). And although I'm not that interested in audio, again, if you're going to pay the big bucks for a camera, at least it gives you color and audio as an option.
Night time quality. Again, if all you care about is crystal clear footage in the daytime, then the indoor camera is for you. But for me, I began to get frustrated that for so much money, I was only getting daytime footage. For a bit more money per camera, I feel that it was well worth it, to be able to see what's going on in my home 24/7.
Logitech server. This is a tough one to explain, but I'll do my best. When you install the cameras and software, the alert system is dependent on Logitech's servers / service. In the month that I've been using the camera, I only had 1 time that their servers went down. In that time, the cameras in my home were recording as they should BUT the alert notification system will not work if Logitech's service is down or disrupted. Although it was only down for a few hours, I was still very unpleased given the fact that the alert system is what it's all about. I don't want to come home to find my house has been burglarized and didn't get a text because the servers were down. Instead, I want to get a text message telling me someone is there, that way I can call the police and increase my chances of getting the suspect while he is still in the residence. The alert service has only been disrupted once, but makes me nervous for what's to come down the road as these cameras begin to sell.
Alerts. Again, read my Pros section about the alert function. Where I had a problem is how long it can take to get the alert text message. I've done some very extensive testing and it ranges between 40 seconds to 4 minutes from when my phone gets the alert text message. Now 4 minutes may not seem like a long time, but a skilled criminal can do A LOT in just a few minutes. I'm not too happy about the variations on alert times, especially since there appears to be no rhyme or reason as to why sometimes I get the notification in under a minute, but other times over 3 minutes. Clearly, it has to do with Logitech servers.
Plug outlet requirements. Although I get why you have to plug in your unit to the actual wall, it doesn't mean I have to like it. It's been a little bit of a challenge with some of my cameras to find a good discreet location coupled with having an available outlet there. I'm guessing that at some point, Logitech will begin selling overpriced extension cords or power bars that allow the cameras to work even without being directly plugged into the wall. I believe a read few reviews from people that have done this though; I would live to get their reply or feedback in this review thread.
Thanks for reading!

Logitech Alert 750e Outdoor Master Security System with Night Vision Review

Logitech Alert 750e Outdoor Master Security System with Night Vision
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all the SETUP is very easy. The on screen prompts will take you though the steps.
1.Install the software.
2.Plug the master network adapter into the power outlet and plug the Ethernet cable into your router
3.Plug the camera into power outlet and click yes to update firmware (adapters and camera).
NOTE: Do not unplug the camera or the master adapter during the update.
Wow that was easy. It took less than 15 minutes to get the system up and running.
PICTURE QUALITY
The picture quality is great during daylight hours but not so great at capturing clear pictures of moving objects in total darkness. However in my case I have a flood light with motion detector that comes on when someone enters the area at night making the video bright and clear.
MOTION DETECTION
What I like is that you can draw areas on the actual image from the video camera to trigger recording. In other words you can eliminate false recordings from cars going by or movement outside your property.
You set up each camera individually providing ultimate flexibility in alerts, sensitivity and recording. In addition, once you have created a LogitechAlert account, you can select which cameras triggers an email alert.
EMAIL ALERTS
You set the LogitechAlert account up from the Settings Menu (the gearwheel icon).
From here you can enter several email addresses. I have mine set to send a text to my cell phone (as I don't have a smart phone with email and web access).
Most cell phone providers offers an email address starting with your cell phone number that will be forwarded to you as a text message.
Please look the email address up on your providers web page. I can not put them up due to Amazon posting regulations.
You may get charged for each text by your cell phone provider so make sure to set the Alert Frequency and Motion Filter conservatively (from within the Settings Menu - Alerts-Advanced).
As mentioned above, I have not received one false alarm although my system is still set using the default values.
RECORDING WITH PC TURNED OFF - THIS IS A GREAT FEATURE.
The camera(s) stores all motion triggered activity regardless if you have the PC on or off. To review all recorded activity, start the PC and click the "Enter Playback Mode" icon. A very intuitive calendar and timeline shows up indicating recordings. Point to a time and click on play to see the activity.
UPDATE:
You can review/playback history from only the dedicated PC on your network.
Logitech suggests not loading the software on more than on PC on the network.
If you do, you can only watch live video but review/playback will not work from the other PC's (also unexpected results may occur).
NOTE: You can view the real time images from anywhere on the web with the free Logitech Web Alert Viewer. To get full control with playback via a remote PC you must purchase the Logitech Web and Mobile Commander for an annual fee* of $80 (at the time of this writing).
Unless...
You keep a PC turned on all the time and control it from any PC (or web enabled phone) on the web using Teamviewer or LogMeIn (both are free for private use - you can download the programs from Cnet.com). Then you can access the Logitech Alert Commander interface as you normally do from home.
UPDATE 1: I am using the free version of LogMeIn and it works great. The only disadvantage is that you can not hear audio from the home computer. But you can see the live video feed and use playback along with camera adjustments etc. Actually you can operate your home computer just as if you were sitting in front of it. You can access it from work or anywhere in the world via the internet.
UPDATE 2: I have now used both remote programs for over a month. Logmein appear to be unreliable with respect to video quality. TEAMVIEWER IS THE WINNER (To get perfect video quality: select "View", "Optimize Quality" from the TeamViewer screen on the remote computer).
Cost for leaving your home computer on all the time.
The cost for a 40 Watts consumer** 24 hours per day, 365 days per year = $35/year at $0.10 per kWh.
However, LogMeIn allows you to use "Wake Up On LAN" so you can turn your home computer on from the remote computer (Too much to cover here).
* Come on Logitech!!! Reduce it to a $50 one time fee and sell more systems to happier customers.
** One UPS manufacturer estimates 40 watts power consumption from an entry level desk top with a 20 LCD monitor. Turn the monitor off and bring the cost down even more. Also set the hard drive to turn off if not in use via Windows "Power Options Interface". You may also be able to set the home computer to "Wake up on LAN".
INSTALLATION OF THE CAMERA'S POWER/DATA ADAPTER IN THE ATTIC
First of all I wanted to hide the wire to the camera.
Logitech's instructions show the power/data wire going from the camera to a power outlet on the side of the house.
Consequently a thief can easily unplug the camera.
Solution
Pull an extension cord from a power outlet in the attic (or somewhere else) and connect it to the grey power supply/adapter for the camera.
IT WORKS!!!
I know Logitech Customer Service had told another reviewer "The adapters CANNOT be installed in the attic".
Logitech may be concerned about high attic temperatures present in some climates.
My attic does not get very hot; in addition I mounted the adapter just above the lower perimeter soffit vent where outside air constantly flows in.
The power/data Ethernet cable to the exterior camera (mounted under the roof overhang) is now routed through the soffit to the camera adapter in the attic.
Drill a 9/16" (14 mm) hole to allow the Ethernet plug to pass through the soffit. Mount the power adapter over the soffit vent with the power cable coming out at the top as shown in Logitech's instructions.
NOTE: I used a 100 foot grounded heavy duty extension cord plugged into a grounded power outlet. I don't know if using a grounded outlet and grounded extension cord matters because none of the adapters are equipped with grounded plugs. You may not need a heavy duty cord as the camera adapter uses very little power.
PREVENT BLACKOUT DURING POWER OUTAGES USING A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)
I still want the surveillance system to work during power outages or if the power line to the house is cut.
The Manual tell you it will not work if you use a surge protector or UPS.
Solution
I already have the cable modem and the wireless router plugged into an APC BN600R Battery Backup (UPS), so all I had to do was to plug the black Logitech network adapter into the UPS and pull an extension cord from the UPS to the grey Logitech camera adapter. All the equipment is fed from a single UPS.
IT WORKS!!!
The disadvantage is that you have to pull extension cord(s) from the UPS to the camera adapters. In my case it was not a problem because the extension cord would drop down from the attic between the studs in one of the walls to where I have my router.
I am sure you can use a higher capacity UPS as long as ALL your Logitech adapters are connected to it.
SOUND/AUDIO
Out of the box there was no audio from the camera.
Solution
To turn the sound on:
1) Un-mute from the Command screen (slider at the right hand bottom) and
2) Click on Settings (gearwheel icon) and click on the camera name (your camera(s) will be listed by the name you give them during setup "Entry way", "Hall way" etc.)
Then check the box Enable Audio (after accepting the legal notice).
Note: If you have more than one camera, you have to Enable Audio for each one.
GOOD QUALITY PRICE RATIO
Overall I will rate the Logitech 750e a quality system for the money. As an alternative, you can purchase professional systems that will cost thousands of $ but is unlikely that they have the remote access this system has.
Perhaps Logitech have "beefed up" the mounting hardware for the camera. My hardware is rigid and of good quality. Another reviewer had problems with the hardware.
(I tightened and pre-adjusted the holder/adapter and added a drop of Locktite (blue) to the threads prior to installation. It is easier done on the ground as compared to the top of a 15 foot ladder).
UPDATE: The mounting plate is covered with a rubber cover. You have to tighten the holder rod FIRMLY to the base to ensure a rigid mount (or else the camera will wiggle).
Also, one of the cameras would turn freely no matter how hard the thumbscrew was tightened. It turned out that there is a phillips screw hiden inside the short rod which is being clamped by the thumbscrew assembly. The phillips screw was loose. Simply remove the thumbscrew completely to take the assembly apart. Then tighten the phillips screw and put it back together.
Logitech, QA/QC you need to address this issue. This is probably why so many people are complaining about the camera mount.
SUMMARY
-Very easy setup
-Great picture quality in daylight but not in total darkness
-Motion detection is very reliable
-Flexible email alert settings
-Workaround if you don't have a phone with email or web access
-Recording with PC turned off - great feature
-Workaround to avoid paying $80 per year for remote access
-Attic installation of the camera's power adapter
-How to connect "Battery UPS backup"
-How to turn the sound feature on
