DeLonghi PAC C120 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Review

Although heavy and probably larger than a window air conditioner, this unit is worth every penny. I have a home office with a server and a couple PCs in it and this unit keeps the room as cold as I want it! I have central air - but my office always seemed stuffy. Now the entire upstairs loft is as cool and comfortable as the rest of the house. The unit vents outside - and even with my sliding windows, the venting area is narrow and does not obstruct my view. It can also be vented directly through the wall, but that seemed a little extreme to me. It is probably as loud as a window unit and has a fan only mode and a de-humidifier mode. The temperature is set by degrees, not some dumb low-medium-high setting. It plugs into a normal household plug and could be moved to another area of the house with little trouble. I am thinking, if the power went out, this unit could be used with the generator, we would not cook like the last time we lost power in the summer.

With a cooling capacity of 12,000 BTUs, this portable air conditioner means any room of the house can stay comfortably cool in the summer months. The unit's durable indoor/outdoor castor wheels and built-in side carry handles make it simple to transport from the living room during the day to the bedroom at night, while its easy-to-use electronic controls and LCD display ensure effortless operation. Choose from an automatic fan function or three fan speeds, depending on the personal comfort level desired. It also provides a dehumidifying mode to help reduce excess moisture in the air and a fan-only mode for air circulation without cooling. Other highlights include quiet operation thanks to its high-efficiency compressor and components, an adjustable thermostat with a 24-hour programmable timer for energy savings, air filtration to promote cleaner indoor air, and dripless operation, which means no bucket to empty. A full-function LCD remote control comes included, as well as a window bracket and exhaust hose for easy installation with no tools required. The portable air conditioner measures approximately 18-1/5 by 14-3/5 by 30-2/5 inches.

I use this in my bedroom. It gets really hot, especially in the summer, and I also have a lot of electronic equipment(av receiver, Xbox 360, PS3, LCD tv, some halogen lamps, etc.) and to top that all off I am really hot natured. So I needed something to keep the room cool. This thing does it effortlessly. The temp. in my room used to climb up to 75ºF, now with the SoleusAir it stays at around 66-68ºF, just how I like it. On a side note, my central A/C went out last summer and it got up to 83ºF in my house, but the SoleusAir kept it at a cool 68ºF in my room. So you can count on it even under the most demanding loads. It also has a built-in heater as well and it heats as well as it cools. So this is really an all-in-one unit. The only downside(along with any other portable a/c unit) is that you must run 2 hoses(one exhaust, one intake) to a window. It comes with a window installation kit, but I live near a busy street so I can sometimes hear outside noise... but it's not too bad.
But I would highly recommend this product.

I have never seen such a dumb electronic device for regulation of air.
I still don't understand how this thing can decide to not trigger the air con while it is needed. Then suddently it may decide to do it... and depending on how you turned it on/off, its behaviour will change.
Just to say that the computer regulator for heater/air con is just not working decently !
A big mistake to have acquired this Soleus device.
(even 1 star is too much)

For exceptional versatility and comfort throughout the year, this four-in-one portable appliance functions as an air conditioner, heater, fan, and dehumidifier. Use it as a 1350-watt air conditioner with 12,000 BTUs of cooling power for staying comfortable in the summer, then in the winter switch over to its 1160-watt heater mode, which uses Heat Pump technology to deliver 12,000 BTUs of heating power. The user-friendly electronic control panel makes it easy to select the mode of operation, the ideal room temperature from 61 to 88 degrees F, and the fan speed--low, medium, or high. A handy remote control comes included, which allows for changing the settings from across the room. The unit can also function as an evaporative dehumidifier, removing up to 60 pints of moisture from the air a day to help maintain ideal comfort levels. Its Auto mode provides added convenience where the unit operates as a heater when the room temperature falls below 68 degrees F, as a dehumidifier when the room temperature sits between 68 and 80 degrees F, and as an air conditioner when the room temperature reaches above 80 degrees F. Other highlights include Sleep mode, a 24-hour automatic on/off programmable timer, optional oscillation, and an easy-access permanent air filter. Best of all, its portable design means there's no need for permanent installation. Simply connect the exhaust hoses to an open window using the included window-exhaust kit. The unit's efficient self-evaporating technology means there's no need to continually drain the unit. In extremely humid conditions, however, condensation may collect in the built-in tank if it can't evaporate fast enough. The compressor will automatically shut-off if the tank reaches capacity, and a "full" indicator will alert users to the need for emptying the tank. Accessories include two exhaust hoses, two hose adapters, two window-kit adapters, a window kit with four sliding panels, two air intake and outlet covers, and an owner's manual. Ideal for the home or office as an air conditioner, heater, fan, and dehumidifier, the appliance measures 18-1/2 by 19 by 32-1/4 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Arrived with plastic cover cracked and taped together. The cover is very flimsy and difficult to align in replacement. Otherwise, I am pleased with performance. It is not too noisy and cools a former attached garage which has been converted into a home gym and office. Only gets 4 Stars because of cover problems. I have owned it for one month.

I was skeptical at first for a brand that was unknown to me. But since it was a heatwave this was the only one around that met all the specs that I needed and it was for use in my unusally hot basement. Well what a plesant surprise! This little baby cools off my 2000 sq ft basement in mintues. I strongly recomend this unit. One bonus for me was the shape and size of the portabel vent. It was perfect for the small basement windows of my home.

Sharp CV-P10NC 10,00 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Full Function Remote C... Review

Sharp CV-P10NC 10,00 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Full Function Remote C...
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UPDATE 5/5/2010: This unit is still running as efficiently and effectively as ever. We are very, very happy with our purchase.
---------------
About a month and a half ago, my husband and I purchased this at our local Costco (because of good pricing and their great return policy) after researching and reading mixed online reviews on MANY, MANY portable air conditioners. He's in the Navy, so we're currently living in Port Hueneme, CA (Southern CA near L.A.) right on the ocean and the humidity is pretty high. We've used it on days with temperatures ranging from ~78 to 86F and are still waiting for a really hot day to hit. It might not happen this year, but it certainly did last year. We use it in our upstairs bedroom--approximately 180 square feet--with the door shut to keep our cats out.
The results:
* Noise: Fantastic. We used to have one fan blowing on full-speed in there. While you CAN hear this unit, it is quieter than the fan was, by probably 50%. As another reviewer noted, you can hear a little water trickling from time to time, but that doesn't really bother us, and it's certainly not constant. We sleep like babies with this unit about a foot away from the bed.
* Cooling: Again, top-notch. I really wasn't expecting much from a portable after reading so many bad reviews for all of the portable air conditioners we researched. On the day that we installed it, it was 83F outside (and probably close to 90F in our bedroom) and, being pessimistic in our expectations, we put it on the MegaCool setting and left the bedroom, closing the door behind us. About 2 hours later, we headed up the stairs to check on it. About halfway up the stairs, we could feel that the air was cooler than it had been downstairs. In fact, the entire top floor of our townhouse (approximately 500 square feet) was noticeably cooler, even with the bedroom door closed. When we opened the bedroom door, it had already dropped a good 10 to 15 degrees. We left it for a few more hours, and when we went back in it was so cold that we got the down comforter out to cuddle under as we slept. And sleep we did--better than we had in ages. I think that 4 hours to go from 90F to what felt like near 50F is very reasonable. Since then, we've kept it between 67F and 70F.
* Remote: Very user friendly. You can also cover the sensor on the remote with your hand and click the Power button to turn the remote off without turning the air conditioner off--this elongates the battery life.
* Dehumidifying: It's unbelievable how well this dehumidifies the air here. Remember, we live right on the ocean, so it's always very humid. I LOVE that my sheets no longer feel soggy when I sleep, and that my husband and I can sleep touching without sticking to each other. And if this tells you anything, my hair is really wavy/curlyish, and when I sleep at night in the dehumidified bedroom, it gets very close to perfectly straight. As soon as I go down to the lower level of our townhouse, though, my hair immediately starts curling. My husband tends to laugh at how quickly the curls form once I leave the bedroom. I never had this experience with centralized AC when I lived in Texas. My point? It dehumidifies REALLY well.
* Draining: We've done this twice in the last month and a half and probably could have gotten away with doing it once. A lot of the water evaporates right out of the window, and the tank seems to have a decent capacity. The machine will also automatically shut itself off if the tank gets too full. The method is also pretty easy. The drain is far enough off the floor that you can use a bucket to empty the unit. One thing we noticed is that even though it has an on/off valve, the off position doesn't seem to work. We have to make sure the stopper is in securely no matter what setting the valve is on.
* Construction: Seems to be quite durable, but not overly heavy. My husband had a broken arm and I was able to drag it from the car and up the stairs with minimal help from him. It was definitely heavy, but it was doable (I'm 6', average to above-average strength for a woman, and not too concerned about breaking a nail, though). Once out of the box, the casters are a real plus when moving it.
* Installation: The installation instructions are a bit tedious and not perfectly written, but it's pretty easy to figure out how to assemble most of the unit without them if you have a decent amount of common sense. The installation is still not a bed of roses, but I don't think installing any other portable unit would be any better. From my research, they all use similar methods, so I can't really complain about this unit. Just an FYI, though: this unit is designed for windows with solid wooden casements--the exhaust piece needs to fit snugly against and screw into the casement. We had a slight problem with this because we have windows that open horizontally rather than vertically, and the casement isn't flat or wooden--it's recessed and metal. We ended up having to make a workaround--some measuring and a quick trip to the local lumber yard, and we had a few plywood inserts. One fills in the recessed casement and allowed us to screw the exhaust piece onto something solid, the other braces the sliding part of the window up against the unit. A bit of a pain, but not too bad nor too ugly.
* Other features: The adjustable louvers work very well. We like to point them up at the ceiling while we sleep, giving nice cool air and great circulation without freezing us out. The Plasmacluster functionality is nice, but when it's on, the unit shows a very BRIGHT blue light. We have difficulty sleeping with it on, so we turn it off at night. Just a head's up in case you want to run Plasmacluster at night--you may need to find a way to cover the light up. [EDIT 5/5/2010: We have since discovered the nifty "Lights" button on the remote control. This turns off the lights on the unit without making you turn off the Plasmacluster functionality, so no worries there any more.]
All in all, we're both so glad we bought this unit. We were mulling over whether the expense would be worth it so we waited and thought for a few months. We agree that we should have just gone ahead and done it MONTHS ago! The summer would have been much more bearable, and we would have been much better rested!!

Average Reviews:

This unit does the job advertised, I will admit that. It does cool a room very well. In fact, it keeps the back half of our house nice and cool.
The downside is that it leaks like crazy. Even with the dehumidifier off. And I live in El Paso, not exactly a humid area of the country.
The problem seems to mostly stem from the fact that unlike most similar units, the internal tank is not removeable. This means you can not drain the water off before it overflows the tank.
To make it worse, there is a drain hole in the rear of the unit. But hooking up a hose does not good. It seems it is only made to drain the unit at the end of the season, not for routine use. This places it to high in the tank to actually drain.
We are seeing roughly a gallon of water a day leaking from this unit. I just wish I had looked here before I bought it.

Designed for quickly cooling any room in the house, this thoughtfully designed portable air conditioner uses environmentally-friendly R410a refrigerant gas to help protect the environment and the ozone layer. Its refrigerant also provides energy-efficient operation, using less energy to deliver the same amount of cooling as other refrigerant types. The air conditioner produces 12,000 BTUs of cooling power and offers four different fan speeds depending upon the level of cooling desired. It also supplies an electronic control panel with an easy-to-read LCD display, a fully featured remote control, and a 24-hour programmable timer that turns the unit on at a specific time--great for coming home to a cool room at the end of the day. In addition to cooling the air, the unit also functions as a dehumidifier with a "dripless" system, which means no annoying bucket to empty. Other highlights include Sleep and Smart modes, built-in air filtration, an energy-efficient adjustable thermostat, and quiet performance thanks to the high-efficiency compressor and components, as well as durable caster wheels and side handles for portability. Accessories include a window bracket and an exhaust hose for easy installation. The unit effectively combines an air cooler, a dehumidifier, and an air cleaner all in one stylish design that will nicely complement any decor. I did not order this via amazon.com, I got it from another vendor who referred me to the manufacturer royal sovereign for service when the unit arrived with a defective hose.
I contacted the manufacturer and sent them the information they requested via fax. This took several tries but I finally got it through with a successful fax report.
Over a month went by and I did not receive the replacement hose, I tried to re-fax them and got rejected about 10 times in a row. My emails have not been returned.
I jury rigged the broken hose with a replacement dryer hose from the hardware store and the story continues. The unit itself will blow alot of cold air, but thats only when its working. It fills up with water far too often, and at one point I found the entire radiator unit completely caked in ice. To 'ice' the cake so to speak this thing is as loud as an 18 wheeler in your living room. You can hear it, annoyingly sometimes even feel it shudder, 2 rooms away. Finally I noticed an enormous hit on my electric bill as the unit is NOT energy star rated.
I would not recommend this to anyone, spend the 2 or 3 hundred extra and get a name brand unit - I am sure you will be happier.

Whynter Eco-Friendly 12,000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner with Heater, Frost White (ARC-12SDH)
We bought this back in September and took it out again recently for the heater function.
Nicely designed unit that has a clean modern look. The display is a concealed LCD band that is simple and understandable without an overload information and meaningless statistics. Although easy to roll around, be sure to get help when lifting up above a foot. The window kit was good quality and overall setup was considerably easy. Just hookup the hoses to the kit and fit the kit snugly into the window opening.
Cools wonderfully. I use it specifically in the baby's room and occasionally in the study. The dual hose design helps with the energy efficiency and overall cooling or heating out. Both rooms are about 18x18 and this unit has no problem cooling down a 95F room to a comfortable temp in less than 30 mins. I'm surprised that the cooling throughput of this unit is actually 20%-30% faster than another 14000 BTU that I have. Nothing scientific but even my wife notices the significant difference.
The heating option is not for heavy duty heating but it works perfectly as a spot heater when you don't want to crank central heat up too much.
To sum it up, this is a surprisingly efficient unit albeit slightly bulky but gives great bang for the buck.

EdgeStar 14,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner for Server Room Review

EdgeStar 14,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner for Server Room
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My company recently bought this unit to replace the older AC unit we already had in our small server room, and the improvement was dramatic. Using the single hose configuration, it very easily keeps our server room (approximately 50 sq. feet) perfectly chilled to the proper temperature. The ease at which it is able to do so makes me certain that it would be just as effective in a much larger space, especially if one were to use the dual-hose configuration. Also noteworthy is that it is relatively quiet while running. With the door to the server room shut, the sound it produces is virtually unnoticeable from the offices we have just down the hall from it.
Set up took literally less than five minutes to complete. After unpacking it, all that was required was wheeling it into position, attaching the hose to the back, and plugging it in, and it was good to go. One minor caveat to note is that the small LCD display attached to the unit requires two AAA batteries to function. These are not included with this product, and the product page does not mention this.

Sharp 13,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote CVPD13PX
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Is it quieter than a smilarly powered window unit that is 1/5 the price? Yes. Is it library quiet? Only when on fan mode only and at the lowest setting.
As an air conditioner operates, it dehumidifies the air. The water has to go somewhere. With a window unit, it drips down the side of the house to the ground. With this thing, it has to store it. Eventually, it fills and you have to drop what you're doing and empty it...what a mess. The drain is about 1 inch from the floor so you have to move it to the top of the stairs or something like that to drain it. Of course, with the one I have, the rubber stopper has a crack so it leaks. I first discovered this when there was a pool of water under the thing and puckered, ruined, wood floor under that.
This thing has a dryer-like hose that goes from the unit to a window. Barely touch it and it falls apart.
I wish I had the receipt. I would return it and get a cheaper, less pain in the ass, window unit.

Whynter Eco-Friendly 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner, Platinum (ARC-12S)
Average Reviews:

This portable A/C works great. I sincerely doubt that it will really cool a 450 sq ft area but it does a great job for my bedroom upstairs...which is all I was really concerned with. My bedroom measures 13' x 12' or 156 sq ft and it takes about an hour to get from 85° F to 69° F. Setting it up was a breeze. The only problem I had was with the window exhaust kit. The expandable PVC plastic window mount wasn't long enough to cover the entire height of my bedroom window...it's about 5 inches too short. I had to cover that space with a piece of plastic that I cut to fit and duct taped in place. One thing I don't like about this unit is the placement of the exhaust hose...it's in the back. Some units have it on the top of the unit so that you can place the unit almost flush against the wall. The back of my unit sticks out about a foot and a half from the wall which makes getting around it a slight pain in the rear...but hey, at least I'll be cool this summer :). Another con...it doesn't have oscilating louvers. The louvers are fixed and can't be adjusted up or down. There are lateral louvers behind the front grill that can be adjusted manually from side to side with a slider. Oh...and one more thing...it's pretty loud when the compressor is running. It takes some getting used to.

I've owned and used several portable air conditioners over the years and I'm truly surprised at the speed of innovation over the last several years. Now it has come to a point where portable units have moved beyond your functional clunky beige contraption to something that has been designed to subtly blend into the surroundings. After deciding between this and a Delonghi (yes, I've finally arrived now that I can afford high-end appliances!) I decided to go with the more compact unit that was at a more affordable price point. I've been using this for about a month now and have been completely satisfied with nearly all aspects. One little gripe that I have, is the absence of handles on the side, it definitely is heavy too. It does however churn out very very cold air, look extremely slick and is a snap to use. The remote control has a myriad of functions that I will eventually use one day but for now, I just need the icey relief from a hot spring day.

Whynter 14,000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner (ARC-14S) Review

Whynter 14,000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner (ARC-14S)
Average Reviews:

I got this to supplement the window unit I've been using for years and ended up just completely replacing the window unit.
Very robotic design, it stands around 3ft tall and is in fact rather slim once you take it out of the packaging. Came with all the necessary accessories to get it running immediately. Hooking it up and putting the hot air vent where my window A/C used to be was extremely straightforward.
We usually power it up after my daughter returns from pre-school and set the temperature to around 74F. It usually shuts off at about 2am when the room and outside temps are nice and comfortable. The air is extremely cold around the unit and gets a good sized room down to a nice temp really fast. It seems very quiet during the day with all the other sounds and my daughter has slept like a baby ever since we got it. I does emit a low hum when it's cooling but otherwise the fan sound is not noticeable to me. You can turn it on high for a few minutes but after awhile, that's overkill. It does a great job on a low fan setting once the room is almost at the temp you want it at.
I really like the idea of not having to use central air like in our old apartment. I think over time the utility savings will easily cover the cost of the unit. The best part is I can bring it with us if we ever move.
It's worked excellently for a couple of weeks now and I may just end up getting another for our own room.
