We bought this unit 6 months ago to try and cool our 2nd floor (3 rooms). I set the unit to 70 degrees and it would constantly freeze up (meaning, ice would form after about 1 hour). I noticed that the unit drew more air in than it blew into the room. Giving the unit the benefit, I sealed everything in the room as tight as I could (insulating, foaming, etc) and closed off the other 2 rooms. It managed to cool that one room (12 x 16) but still would ice over on days of 100+ degrees (unit set for 70 degrees).
Heat pump: I turned it on in mid October. Today (December 10th), all of the lights on the front panel were blinking on and off and the unit would not turn off using the control panel power button. I unplugged it from the wall and left it sit for an hour. Plugging it back in (an hour later), the unit would run but all of the lights were flashing on and off with no control over the power.
[...]
I am awaiting customer service to contact me to see how they will react to the 1 year warranty. I will try to post what has happened to keep consumers informed.

I use this in my bedroom. It gets really hot, especially in the summer, and I also have a lot of electronic equipment(av receiver, Xbox 360, PS3, LCD tv, some halogen lamps, etc.) and to top that all off I am really hot natured. So I needed something to keep the room cool. This thing does it effortlessly. The temp. in my room used to climb up to 75ºF, now with the SoleusAir it stays at around 66-68ºF, just how I like it. On a side note, my central A/C went out last summer and it got up to 83ºF in my house, but the SoleusAir kept it at a cool 68ºF in my room. So you can count on it even under the most demanding loads. It also has a built-in heater as well and it heats as well as it cools. So this is really an all-in-one unit. The only downside(along with any other portable a/c unit) is that you must run 2 hoses(one exhaust, one intake) to a window. It comes with a window installation kit, but I live near a busy street so I can sometimes hear outside noise... but it's not too bad.
But I would highly recommend this product.

I have never seen such a dumb electronic device for regulation of air.
I still don't understand how this thing can decide to not trigger the air con while it is needed. Then suddently it may decide to do it... and depending on how you turned it on/off, its behaviour will change.
Just to say that the computer regulator for heater/air con is just not working decently !
A big mistake to have acquired this Soleus device.
(even 1 star is too much)

For exceptional versatility and comfort throughout the year, this four-in-one portable appliance functions as an air conditioner, heater, fan, and dehumidifier. Use it as a 1350-watt air conditioner with 12,000 BTUs of cooling power for staying comfortable in the summer, then in the winter switch over to its 1160-watt heater mode, which uses Heat Pump technology to deliver 12,000 BTUs of heating power. The user-friendly electronic control panel makes it easy to select the mode of operation, the ideal room temperature from 61 to 88 degrees F, and the fan speed--low, medium, or high. A handy remote control comes included, which allows for changing the settings from across the room. The unit can also function as an evaporative dehumidifier, removing up to 60 pints of moisture from the air a day to help maintain ideal comfort levels. Its Auto mode provides added convenience where the unit operates as a heater when the room temperature falls below 68 degrees F, as a dehumidifier when the room temperature sits between 68 and 80 degrees F, and as an air conditioner when the room temperature reaches above 80 degrees F. Other highlights include Sleep mode, a 24-hour automatic on/off programmable timer, optional oscillation, and an easy-access permanent air filter. Best of all, its portable design means there's no need for permanent installation. Simply connect the exhaust hoses to an open window using the included window-exhaust kit. The unit's efficient self-evaporating technology means there's no need to continually drain the unit. In extremely humid conditions, however, condensation may collect in the built-in tank if it can't evaporate fast enough. The compressor will automatically shut-off if the tank reaches capacity, and a "full" indicator will alert users to the need for emptying the tank. Accessories include two exhaust hoses, two hose adapters, two window-kit adapters, a window kit with four sliding panels, two air intake and outlet covers, and an owner's manual. Ideal for the home or office as an air conditioner, heater, fan, and dehumidifier, the appliance measures 18-1/2 by 19 by 32-1/4 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Arrived with plastic cover cracked and taped together. The cover is very flimsy and difficult to align in replacement. Otherwise, I am pleased with performance. It is not too noisy and cools a former attached garage which has been converted into a home gym and office. Only gets 4 Stars because of cover problems. I have owned it for one month.

I was skeptical at first for a brand that was unknown to me. But since it was a heatwave this was the only one around that met all the specs that I needed and it was for use in my unusally hot basement. Well what a plesant surprise! This little baby cools off my 2000 sq ft basement in mintues. I strongly recomend this unit. One bonus for me was the shape and size of the portabel vent. It was perfect for the small basement windows of my home.

Whynter Eco-Friendly 12,000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner with Heater, Frost White (ARC-12SDH)
We bought this back in September and took it out again recently for the heater function.
Nicely designed unit that has a clean modern look. The display is a concealed LCD band that is simple and understandable without an overload information and meaningless statistics. Although easy to roll around, be sure to get help when lifting up above a foot. The window kit was good quality and overall setup was considerably easy. Just hookup the hoses to the kit and fit the kit snugly into the window opening.
Cools wonderfully. I use it specifically in the baby's room and occasionally in the study. The dual hose design helps with the energy efficiency and overall cooling or heating out. Both rooms are about 18x18 and this unit has no problem cooling down a 95F room to a comfortable temp in less than 30 mins. I'm surprised that the cooling throughput of this unit is actually 20%-30% faster than another 14000 BTU that I have. Nothing scientific but even my wife notices the significant difference.
The heating option is not for heavy duty heating but it works perfectly as a spot heater when you don't want to crank central heat up too much.
To sum it up, this is a surprisingly efficient unit albeit slightly bulky but gives great bang for the buck.

I purchased this unit in July 2008 and I have had nothing but problems with it. The Soleus support line is always busy, and when you do get someone, they look for an answer and never call back. My front panel to control the unit does not work, and I have tried to get Soleus to replace the panel, with no luck. I have to use the remote control to use the A/C. Around 2 years of service, and the unit started leaking water. It appears the drain line for the unit is not placed far enough back, and so the water pan just drips out of the unit, right onto the floor. You can pay to have the unit shipped back and repaired they said, but the minimum charge is $150 plus shipping charges. Don't waste your money!

EdgeStar 14,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner for Server Room Review

EdgeStar 14,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner for Server Room
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My company recently bought this unit to replace the older AC unit we already had in our small server room, and the improvement was dramatic. Using the single hose configuration, it very easily keeps our server room (approximately 50 sq. feet) perfectly chilled to the proper temperature. The ease at which it is able to do so makes me certain that it would be just as effective in a much larger space, especially if one were to use the dual-hose configuration. Also noteworthy is that it is relatively quiet while running. With the door to the server room shut, the sound it produces is virtually unnoticeable from the offices we have just down the hall from it.
Set up took literally less than five minutes to complete. After unpacking it, all that was required was wheeling it into position, attaching the hose to the back, and plugging it in, and it was good to go. One minor caveat to note is that the small LCD display attached to the unit requires two AAA batteries to function. These are not included with this product, and the product page does not mention this.

Sharp 13,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote CVPD13PX Review

Sharp 13,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote CVPD13PX
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Is it quieter than a smilarly powered window unit that is 1/5 the price? Yes. Is it library quiet? Only when on fan mode only and at the lowest setting.
As an air conditioner operates, it dehumidifies the air. The water has to go somewhere. With a window unit, it drips down the side of the house to the ground. With this thing, it has to store it. Eventually, it fills and you have to drop what you're doing and empty it...what a mess. The drain is about 1 inch from the floor so you have to move it to the top of the stairs or something like that to drain it. Of course, with the one I have, the rubber stopper has a crack so it leaks. I first discovered this when there was a pool of water under the thing and puckered, ruined, wood floor under that.
This thing has a dryer-like hose that goes from the unit to a window. Barely touch it and it falls apart.
I wish I had the receipt. I would return it and get a cheaper, less pain in the ass, window unit.

This portable A/C works great. I sincerely doubt that it will really cool a 450 sq ft area but it does a great job for my bedroom upstairs...which is all I was really concerned with. My bedroom measures 13' x 12' or 156 sq ft and it takes about an hour to get from 85° F to 69° F. Setting it up was a breeze. The only problem I had was with the window exhaust kit. The expandable PVC plastic window mount wasn't long enough to cover the entire height of my bedroom window...it's about 5 inches too short. I had to cover that space with a piece of plastic that I cut to fit and duct taped in place. One thing I don't like about this unit is the placement of the exhaust hose...it's in the back. Some units have it on the top of the unit so that you can place the unit almost flush against the wall. The back of my unit sticks out about a foot and a half from the wall which makes getting around it a slight pain in the rear...but hey, at least I'll be cool this summer :). Another con...it doesn't have oscilating louvers. The louvers are fixed and can't be adjusted up or down. There are lateral louvers behind the front grill that can be adjusted manually from side to side with a slider. Oh...and one more thing...it's pretty loud when the compressor is running. It takes some getting used to.

I've owned and used several portable air conditioners over the years and I'm truly surprised at the speed of innovation over the last several years. Now it has come to a point where portable units have moved beyond your functional clunky beige contraption to something that has been designed to subtly blend into the surroundings. After deciding between this and a Delonghi (yes, I've finally arrived now that I can afford high-end appliances!) I decided to go with the more compact unit that was at a more affordable price point. I've been using this for about a month now and have been completely satisfied with nearly all aspects. One little gripe that I have, is the absence of handles on the side, it definitely is heavy too. It does however churn out very very cold air, look extremely slick and is a snap to use. The remote control has a myriad of functions that I will eventually use one day but for now, I just need the icey relief from a hot spring day.

Whynter 14,000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner (ARC-14S) Review

Whynter 14,000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner (ARC-14S)
Average Reviews:

I got this to supplement the window unit I've been using for years and ended up just completely replacing the window unit.
Very robotic design, it stands around 3ft tall and is in fact rather slim once you take it out of the packaging. Came with all the necessary accessories to get it running immediately. Hooking it up and putting the hot air vent where my window A/C used to be was extremely straightforward.
We usually power it up after my daughter returns from pre-school and set the temperature to around 74F. It usually shuts off at about 2am when the room and outside temps are nice and comfortable. The air is extremely cold around the unit and gets a good sized room down to a nice temp really fast. It seems very quiet during the day with all the other sounds and my daughter has slept like a baby ever since we got it. I does emit a low hum when it's cooling but otherwise the fan sound is not noticeable to me. You can turn it on high for a few minutes but after awhile, that's overkill. It does a great job on a low fan setting once the room is almost at the temp you want it at.
I really like the idea of not having to use central air like in our old apartment. I think over time the utility savings will easily cover the cost of the unit. The best part is I can bring it with us if we ever move.
It's worked excellently for a couple of weeks now and I may just end up getting another for our own room.

Got this unit today and for some reason the unit itself was covered in grease, something like a motor oil.
Anyway, set it up and powered on, after 2 hr running, the unit was blow AIR only even on COLD mode.
Called Amazon to get unit return and they told me I will have to pay $60 - $80 return shipping charge for defective unit.
I will never buy and electric unit from Amazon again. I never have any problem to get full refund from other online retailer.

Soleus Air LX-140, 14,000 BTU Evaporative Portable Air Conditioner, 12,000 BTU Heater, Dehumidifier and Fan Review

Soleus Air LX-140, 14,000 BTU Evaporative Portable Air Conditioner, 12,000 BTU Heater, Dehumidifier and Fan
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Soleus LX-140 is actually the third portable AC we had in the household. The fist, a discontinued Hampton Bay model worked well and is still operating in a second bedroom. The next, the Sunpentown WA-1010e, was terrible, could only cool the room by about 4 degrees, and broke after a year.
On to the Soleus. The most important thing in a portable AC is obviously cooling ability, and the Soleus lives up to its claims of being one of the more powerful units available. At 14,000 BTU, it has proven capable of getting my 150 sq ft bedroom down to 70 degrees on hot nights, and on sweltering summer days when it's in the upper 90's, it can drop the temp around 15 - 20 degrees if we completely shut out any sunlight and leave the unit runnign on high. This may not seem like a huge drop, but it's about the best one can expect from a portable unit. It is also capable of cooling our larger 300 sq ft master suite, although it maxes out at about a 15 degree drop when it's hot and sunny. Unlike most of the other portable ACs we have looked at and used, this one does produce a steady stream of pretty cold air, and while it is massively huger and more expensive than window units, it rivals them in cooling capacity.
Features - The unit has three fan speeds on all the settings and includes a dehumidifier and heater mode in addition to AC and fan. There is temperature control on the main unit that allows you to select anywhere between 61 and 95 degrees, which is a nice feature since some portable ACs just run and run until you are freezing in the middle of the night. If you set the Soleus to 71 degrees, it will run in AC mode until the room cools down, then it will switch to fan mode until the room warms up again. This is a nice feature that not all portable ACs have. There is a timer setting that can be accessed from the main unit, and allows you to run the unit for a specified number of hours. See the remote control section below for info on the 'time of day' timer. It's not the quietest unit in the world, but most of the noise is a result of the air being pushed through the unit rather than the annoying refrigerator noise you get from some. Light sleepers might not like it, but it drowns out the noisy neighbors with its rather non-offensive white noise. It could also stand to have better circulation features. There is a 'swing' mode on the remote that makes the vent rotate in an up and down direction, but it does not move side to side and the up-down differential is not all that huge.
Exhaust and drainage - The unit comes with two 6 ft plastic hoses that need to be stuck out a window so that it can exhaust the hot air. The dual hose method is supposed to make the unit work a lot better, and between the dual hoses and the high power of the unit it seems to perform superior to any other unit we have looked at. The hoses are a bit wide and cumbersome and could stand to be insulated, but they do the job. While the manufacturer claims the unit does not usually need to be drained, I find their statistics a little optimistic. While I don't need to drain it when I am using it at night to drop the temp from 80 to 70, on really hot and humid days the water reservoir will fill up and need to be emptied every 2 days. Unfortunately, a big design flaw is that there is no automatic shut off on the unit. While the 'drain unit' light will come on in plenty of time, if you ignore it for more than a couple hours the water will start to seep out the bottom of the unit and it will just keep running. I did this once overnight and woke up to find about a gallon of watter puddling on the hard wood floor with all the electrical cords lying in it - not the safest of situations. A second design flaw is that the drain is on the very bottom rear of the unit. If you place it on the floor, only a very very shallow pan can catch the water. There is a rubber hose that comes with the unit that can be used to drain the water either out a window or into a bucket, although either option feels a little poor white trash to me.
Power - At 1500 watts, the unit is a bit of a power hog. All AC units are, and when it's 110 degrees outside the electricity expense is well worth it. However, it should be noted that many circuit breakers and fuse boxes can be overloaded when you throw this unit on with a bunch of other stuff. We had to find a plug on a breaker that was separate from our other main electronics, because running this unit, a tv, stereo and computer all on one breaker was not going to work.
Portability - The unit is moderately heavy, although it does have wheels to make portability a little easier. The photos in the ads hide that it is a little deeper than you might think, and it's foot print is a rather large 20 x 20 inches. There are two exhaust hoses that reach about 6 ft in length, so it needs to be right under or right next to a window. We purchased a small table at Ikea for it to sit on so that the hoses extend straight into the window, which helps cooling capacity greatly since the primary exhaust hose is where all the heat from the room goes, and it can get rather warm. Extanding it to its full 6 feet greatly reduces the colling capacity of the unit, since that's like having a long tubular heater in the room. Better insulated exhaust hoses should be at the top of every portable AC designers list, but none of them seem to have them.

The remote that comes with the unit is so-so. It allows you to access most of the functions, although you need to point it straight at the unit or it will not pick up the signal. Even when the unit does communicate with the remote, it doesn't function 100% properly. For example, if I press 'mode' to switch from AC to fan, the unit will beep to tell me it received the signal. However, it may switch from AC to fan like I asked, or it may stay on AC, or it may switch to heater. Unfortunately you can't tell without looking at the top of the unit. There is also a timer setting on the remote that supposedly lets you program what time of day you want the unit to switch on, probably so you can come home to a cool room after work. This does not work all that well, since you have to remember to point the remote at the unit before leaving and hope it actually turns the unit on when it's supposed to. There is no clock or time of day setting on the main unit at all, so for this feature you have to depend on the remote 100%. The remote is not backlit, so it is hard to see at night.
Overall, the unit gets an A for cooling, a B+ for features, and a C- for remote control. Since my primary objective was to cool a room and getting around the difficulties with the remote is relatively simple, I would indeed recommend this to anyone looking to cool a 200 - 400 sq ft room.
