Royal Sovereign ARP-4009 Portable Air Conditioner 9,000 BTU Review

Royal Sovereign ARP-4009 Portable Air Conditioner 9,000 BTU
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We purchased the royal Sovereign ARP-4009 June 2008, used it last summer for about 3 months and didn't turn it on again until July of this year. It worked for about one week and stopped blowing cold air after that. The unit still turns on and produces air but it blows hot air. We realized that we had just missed the one-year Full Warranty period but the unit still qualifies for the Limited Five Year Warranty which the manufacture will replace the compressor (parts only). I looked up for Royal Sovereign's website for a service contact and they showed a total of 10 in California. I called two and were told by both that they do not service Royal Sovereign anymore. I called a 3rd repair shop which is approximately 45 miles from my house. I made an appointment and brought the unit in. They informed me after a week that there was a problem with the compressor and the condenser. Even though, the parts will be supplied by Royal Sovereign but their labor would cost $250. For the price, we could almost purchase a new portable air condition.
I don't understand how the unit would stop working after one year or to be exact, 3 months of usage. I am frustrated that Royal Sovereign does not have enough service locations which made it very difficult to compare price on the repair. The next closest repair shop to me is approximately 60+ miles away and a totally different direction from the first shop that gave me the estimate. And we only live 20 miles East of downtown Los Angeles!

Frigidaire FAP094P1Z 9,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Electronic Controls Review

Frigidaire FAP094P1Z 9,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Electronic Controls
Average Reviews:

Consumer Reports says this portable air conditioner is much less efficient than a comparable window unit. It's definitely more expensive than a window air conditioner (probably at least double the cost); you're paying for appearance and convenience, not functionality. (It's easy to disconnect this unit and roll it away into a corner or closet.)
I bought two of these for two rooms with sliding casement windows that posed problems for window units -- and I didn't want to bother with installing and then removing bulky window units every season. One of the rooms is a very large bedroom with a cathedral ceiling, and the Frigidaire portable air conditioner has no problem keeping it cool. Your options for placing the unit are rather limited -- there is a somewhat flexible duct that must be run from the back of the unit to a window (or a hole through an exterior wall), and you also need a nearby electrical outlet, preferably on an isolated circuit.

Amana 9,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner - AP095R Review

Amana 9,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner - AP095R
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this model for a bedroom and it takes a while to get used to the racket. The fan mode is quiet, but once the compressor kicks in to cool things down it sounds like a locomotive!

I would think twice before buying another portable unit like this one, and most certainly would not buy a second "Amana." I need some sleep, and this certainly was not considered when they designed this model a/c.
Then finally the thing went haywire!
A few months into purchase the temperature setting went to ninety nine degrees on it's own, and the unit died a fairly quick death. The warantee replaced the unit after a few thousand calls for repair, during which I had to deal with "Haier" not the "Amana Company"
Talk about things not being what the seem - it is just labeled "Amana" proving "Cheap Trick" is not just the name of a rock band.

SPT WA-1010H 10,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote-Control Cooling and Heating Review

SPT WA-1010H 10,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote-Control Cooling and Heating
Average Reviews:

This particular review is for a previous model of this unit. It is possible that some of these issues have been addressed with the newer models- but potential buyers might want to ask some questions regarding these issues prior to purchasing. I purchased four of these units in the summer of 2007. Of the four, only three actually worked - the fourth never seemed to cool the way other three did. The other three do a fair job of both heating and cooling their respective areas of the house - which is a drafty 100-yr old house with 12-ft ceilings in New Orleans, so it is no small feat to moderate the temperatures. But that is where the good news ends. Here is my list of grievances: 1) The foam that is provided for securing the vent tube in the window is far too flimsy for the job. We have subsequently used plywood with a hole cut for the vent tube to pass through. 2) The drain pan for the water reservoir is barely large enough to hold the volume of water that will come out of the reservoir when full. I can't tell you how many times we have had to mop water off of our floors. In addition, the drain cap is placed in a receded spot on the back of the unit, where it is nearly impossible to see what you are doing and equally difficult to get your fingers in there to unscrew the cap and remove the plug. 3) On a similar note, the flimsy plastic tube that can allow continuous drainage out of the reservoir, if you choose to drill holes in your floor or wall, is far too short to serve the purpose, and far too easily knocked off of the unit by pets/children/clumsy adults. We have drilled holes in our floor and attached plastic tubing from Home Depot/Lowes to allow continuous drainage. This works OK, if you make sure that the tubing doesn't become kinked and maintains a downward angle so that gravity helps maintain the flow of water (more difficult than one might think). 4)If you are successful in getting your unit set up, you will find that you had better use the provided caps for the vent tubes if it starts to rain. The open vent tube serves as a wonderful down spout for a good hard rain to make its way through your window and into the back of the unit, where it can then drain directly onto your floor. 5) Do not plan on running your unit in a room where you plan on watching TV, talking on the phone, or other activities which require listening. They are obnoxiously loud. 6) Since they must be located near a window for venting, and you will find that permanent drainage is far preferable to coming home to find the reservoir full and the room temperature hot as heck in the summer, they are not really mobile. And last, but certainly not least,...7) During the heating cycle, the heating element kicks on and off....but the fan does not. This results in periods of time when cold air is blown out of the unit. My recommendation: do yourself a favor and buy window air conditioners and portable ceramic heaters, you will likely be more happy in the end.

Haier HPAC9M Portable Air Conditioner with 9,000 BTU Cooling Capacity Review

Haier HPAC9M Portable Air Conditioner with 9,000 BTU Cooling Capacity
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I heartily recommend this unit. I live in a condo in Southern California that is older and doesn't have A/C. The past two months California experienced a record breaking heat wave. The temp in our beach city reached a blistering 108 with a humidity level to match. It varied between 78-98%. The heat was so bad you'd feel like you were breathing water when you walked outside. I put this unit in my bedroom. Guess where my animals and I spent all of our time while at home? I don't have to watch any water levels, I turn it up as high (cool) as it will go and run the unit 24/7. I totally recommend this unit for a room unit. No, it doesn't have enough BTU's to cool say, a living room, but a room the size of my bedroom (15.6 x 11.6)? It works wonderfully! Buy one and you'll stay cool in whatever room you choose to place this unit as long as the room size fits with the specs.
****07/21/2009**** Had to add a note: This thing is still GOING STRONG! Works as well now as it did the first day I got it. Yet, an Amcor I purchased AFTER this Haier just died in the middle of a scorcher. I am so impressed with the durability, lasting power, ease of use and portability I bought another unit (14,000 BTU) for the living room. Did the same modifications I did with the original . . . I use foam core to "extend" the window pieces, so they will fit my sliders. The new one also is WONDERFUL. It cools the entire living room to the point when guests open the front door the first thing out of their mouths is "Wow, this feels so good!" Can you tell I am happy with Haier?

Symphony Portable Evaporative Cooler Features 3,000 CFM of Cooling Review

Symphony Portable Evaporative Cooler Features 3,000 CFM of Cooling

This item is truelly a piece of crap.
1.Their so called cooling pad (Made of bamboo pieces with a net over. This is more like early 20th century technology. What a piece of cheap crap) gets dirty and dusty and there isn't a way to clean it. There aren't any instructions (Their whole instuction booklet is a one page sheet) and I tried my best to clean it but didn't find a way. I unscrewed some screws trying to take a part out to clean it but decided to put them back after about 10 screws. Looked as you have to take the whole thing apart but I didn't take a chance doing it knowing how bad a product this is and it may never work again
2.It gives a bad odor after a little use.
3.The wheels keep falling off every time you try to move it.
4.The chord is very short and you'll definitely need extensions to reach the outlet.(Huge piece of crap with very short chord. Chord can barely reach the floor. What a joke)
5.The water level gauge is inaccurate and very easy to over fill it with water spilling onto your floor.
I don't know if there are any comparable products in the market but I strongly suggest you do search for one and I am (1000% sure) anything will be better than this made in India crap.

This is what the first few nights were like: waking up every two hours (not an exaggeration) to drain a gallon of water (again, not an exaggeration) from this thing because it turns itself off when the "internal water reservoir" is full. Sweating and struggling to not spill water all over the floor since the "gravity drainage" requires even an attached hose to be almost level with the ground, meaning you need a shallow pan to drain into, then picking up this pan and pouring it into a larger bucket almost guarantees spilling water. Calling Friedrich for help, being on hold for 20 minutes only to find out that 1) condensation pumps are unfortunately not available for this particular model to enable the hose to be directed out the window. 2) Getting this three week old machine checked out to see if the self-evaporator is malfunctioning would require somehow transporting a hundred pounds of bulky clumsy plastic to a service facility 3). The suggestion that the machine be elevated onto a platform in order to provide enough gravity to drain it out the window and rigged so it's wheels don't slide it off crashing 5 feet to the ground possibly spilling water and electrified wires all over the bedroom as you sleep. Which I eventually managed to do, now the thing sits up so high I can't reach the top of it. Good thing it comes with a remote. Too bad the whole window is now blocked by it and I can't imagine it would fit in with anyone's decorating scheme.
Other than that, when the machine is running and it's not humid or hot, it works great! Nice and loud enough to block out any sounds that you may have had anywhere near you, and does get the room cool. Too bad the room gets hot again while you struggle to not drown everything you own (unless you elevate it for draining).

We purchased the Frigidaire FRA083PT1, because loading our large air conditioner
into the window was becoming too difficult. We've been quite pleased with it.
It is 90 deg out and a cool 77 deg inside cooling 600 sq ft. We keep the other
rooms closed off. I've also had the door of my office open for a while and it quicklycooled that space as well. The only thing I don't like is its large size and the fact that
the window attachment piece was too large for the 23" wide window we wanted to put it in and had
to cut the plastic piece down to fit.

I purchased this unit in July 2008 and I have had nothing but problems with it. The Soleus support line is always busy, and when you do get someone, they look for an answer and never call back. My front panel to control the unit does not work, and I have tried to get Soleus to replace the panel, with no luck. I have to use the remote control to use the A/C. Around 2 years of service, and the unit started leaking water. It appears the drain line for the unit is not placed far enough back, and so the water pan just drips out of the unit, right onto the floor. You can pay to have the unit shipped back and repaired they said, but the minimum charge is $150 plus shipping charges. Don't waste your money!

I bought this AC unit during the excess heat wave this summer. The unit, (once properly vented) works really well for cooling my bed room but it shuts off when the water needs drained. Durning these hot temperatures this is after only 2-2.5 hrs. Draining the water is not an easy task because the drain is only 1 inch from the floor so you can only use a really really shallow dish. It does come with a hose to connect to a drain for continous drainage but the drain must be below or at the same level as the AC unit.
This drainage problem makes the unit NOT useful for long term cooling (you can't run it all night or use it to cool while at work)
As a long term solution I am working on buidling a stand to set the unit on for continous drainage into a bucket but it is heavey and vibration makes noise a problem. Other portable AC unit have a collecting bottle which is easy to revome for drainage.

Ideal for rooms up to 400 square feet, this portable air conditioner features a 12,000-BTU cooling capacity and an energy-efficiency rating of 12.63. The unit also functions as a dehumidifier, removing up to 65 pints of moisture from the air per day (the dehumidifier functions automatically in AC mode). During the cooling process, its self-evaporating system extracts water from the air into the unit. Most of this water then gets recycled and used to cool the cooling coils for more efficient operation. The air conditioner comes equipped with a 3-1/5-pint water tank and two fan speeds, as well as a digital thermostat, digital temperature display, and remote control, which makes it simple to use. Choose between continuous operation or the programmable timer, which can be preset up to 12 hours. The unit also provides a 64- to 90-degree F thermostat, a washable air filter, an activated carbon filter to help remove odor, a built-in water tank or extended water tube for continuous drainage, and an easy-grip handle and large casters for convenient mobility. Other highlights include an LCDI plug, fire-resistant PVC plastic housing, a rotary compressor, directional air discharge louvers, and an extendable exhaust hose (up to 5 feet). I bought this product two days ago. I live in upstate New York and the humidity can be deadly. The first day the remote worked and I was very excited. Yesterday, the remote did not work and today I put new batteries in it. Guess what? It still doesn't work. Without the remote you cannot do anything but turn it on. You can't change the temperature, you can't change the function, you can't change the speed at which the air comes out, you simply cannot do anything. I called the 800 number and was told that the remote was on BACKORDER for 30-90 days! 30-90 days!! Summer and the heat will be over by then! When asked why this was, the answer was that the product needs to be shipped from CHINA and that in order for the 30-90 days to begin, they had to have my proof of purchase first! We all know that large corporations take several days to several weeks to process anything, so to add this on top of the fact it takes that long makes me never want to purchase another Haier product again. My suggestion is that you do the same with customer service like this.

I just got this item delivered yesterday on a hot, muggy 87 degree day and was so excited. Unfortunately when I unpacked the unit it appeared as though this might have been a repacked return, there was a broken wheel at the bottom of the box. Regardless I though, okay I can deal with a broken wheel since they do provide a replacement...I set it up and had it running and it seemed to be working alright. Today the hose portion of the unit that is screwed into the window venting panel has come "unglued" from the ring that holds it in place against the window vent. This is one day old, the unit hasn't been moved around a lot so it can't be that the hose was stretched and/or manipulated. I'm really disappointed so far...it isn't like this is some light weight item that can be shipped back easily and it isn't a cheap (price wise) product. I caution anyone else that has bought this or is considering buying this unit to shop around and read/post reviews. This product only had one "glowing" review when I purchased...

Room cools a 15 x 20 ft. room plus attached bathroom nicely. I am in a fairly dry desert climate and it is cheaper and more effective than A/C.
Need to refill every day or two with a couple gallons of H2O and it also has an ICE TRAY you can add ice cubes to that helps cool a little more.
Will buy another if the need arises.

I just got this thing today july 22nd 2009. Its pretty good. Its basically like a super fan. It will make your room a little cooler than a fan, but it wont make it really cold like a portable ac. I put alot of ice in there and it made it a little cooler. It has an ice box with ice gel inside. Basically you put that in your freezer and put it back in the box, and it keeps the water cold. The gel would keep it colder longer than ice. I didnt get to try the ice box yet, but itll definitely help For $99, its a great fan, but if you want it to be really cold, youll need a portable ac. if a fan is 4/10, then this would be a 6 or 7 with lots of ice, and a portable ac is 10/10. Im going to play with it more and see if I can get it to blow colder with the ice box. I think thatll make it alot better. hopefully this helps. If you buy at air-n-water you get free shipping on it and ANYTHING else you buy as long as its in your cart. I saved $50 on shipping my portable ac because I bought them together. I paid $89 for this with the code summer. Im pretty happy with it and im buying 2 more tonight, but ill stick with my portable ac in my room at night for some real "alaska" cold haha.

SPT Portable Air Conditioner, 9000 BTUs, WA-9000E Review

SPT Portable Air Conditioner, 9000 BTUs, WA-9000E
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me explain what I think about this unit. I have 3500 square feet house in Central Florida and top of the line heat pump Central Air just installed a few years ago. All works perfect except one thing: I have to cool the entire house with it and at 4500 Watts in case of power down my diesel generator at 6500 Watts is just about running it when 1100 Watts refrigerator and lights are on at the same time. Another thing is Central Air conditioner will get you over 250 bucks electric bill during summer and this is when thermostat is set to only 79 degrees Fahrenheit. Now, I ordered this unit thinking it is going to be so-so portable that can subsidize cooling now and then. The unit came in UPS, it is about 84 lbs, has wheels, is very quiet, does wonders drying the air, very nice quality built and components, remote, digital thermostat, can be converted to auto drain with just additional hose if you really must, runs on 1100 Watts, and is pleasant to look at. At 9000 BTU it is very nice gizmo indeed - no vibrations, smooth working and very well made. That very same day I received it and run it for entire day, I ordered another one just like it. I hope that explains how good and useful this thing is. Get one if you need one and you will be happy you did. BTW, packaging for shipping was absolutely exemplary - this thing would have to be dropped from 2nd floor on concrete to get damaged in all that styrofoam and cartons. I am very happy with this purchase. Remote is also quite handy when you use it in the bedroom at night. Water tank that had to be emptied is actually good thing, because no worries about over flooding the unit, and you can distilled water for ironing or car battery if you ever need that. The conversion adapter for continues water drain is included if you need that. I am somehow puzzled with negative review posted under Alesia, because I went to this individual's "see my other reviews" and there were like a HUNDRED of portable units, all with the SAME REVIEW and all purchased on the SAME DAY. That is very strange indeed. It is either mistake or overdose. Anyway, I think this unit is working well and it is worth the money. I use it already for over a month and it is better then ever.

8,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner - Koldfront Review

8,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner - Koldfront
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hello everyone!
Portable air conditioners work by taking the air from your room, cooling it, and blowing the hot air out through an exhaust hose attached to your window.
But blowing hot air to the outside creates negative pressure inside your room which, in turn, pulls in more hot air from the outside (the amount of air blown out is equal to the amount of air pulled in). It is kind of self defeating.
The portable air conditioner is able to cool your room as long as the air it exhausts is hotter than the hot air pulled in, then there is an overall cooling effect. But as the temperature outside increas, a small A/C unit may not have enough BTU to to cool the air enough to compensate the hot air being sucked in.
I made the mistake of using a traditional web based cooling calculator to estimate the amount of BTU's needed for a portable A/C. If I had read the web page more carefully I would have noticed that these BTU calculators are for window/wall mounted air conditioners. The major difference between a window A/C and a portable A/C is that the window unit has its heat exchange coils outside and does not create negative pressure in your room (in other words, the cold air in the room is not directly diluted by warm air being sucked in from the outside). Without the negative pressure, there is no hot air being pulled in, so the amount of BTUs needed to cool the room is much less. Of course, even with a window A/C, warm air still seeps into the room but at a lower rate.
I estimate that I would need at least 50% more BTU in a portable air conditioner than that shown in web based BTU calculator for my needs. So instead of the 8,000 BTU Koldfront unit, I should have gotten a 12,000 BTU portable air conditioner.
Note: some portables A/C have two hoses, one for the exhaust and one for the intake so they do not create negative pressure. These units are more effecient and the web based BTU calculator should apply.
Here are the key takeaways:
1. Unless you have a two hose model (which maintains neutral pressure in your room), these portable A/C units are inefficient and are more costly to operate than a conventional through the wall/window air conditioner.
2. If you can, try to get a two hose portable A/C unit. But if not, then you will probably need to increase the portable's BTUs by 50% (or 1.5x) when using a conventional web based BTU calculator. CompactAppliance tried to warn me but I didn't listen. What did you expect from a 13yr old? :-).
3. Do buy from a reputable dealer, such as CompactAppliance. They graciously accepted my return without any hassles. Be sure you always read the vendor's return policy (some have reasonable restocking fees but some won't take it back at all!)
I hope this was helpful.
