Royal Sovereign ARP-4009 Portable Air Conditioner 9,000 BTU Review

Royal Sovereign ARP-4009 Portable Air Conditioner 9,000 BTU
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We purchased the royal Sovereign ARP-4009 June 2008, used it last summer for about 3 months and didn't turn it on again until July of this year. It worked for about one week and stopped blowing cold air after that. The unit still turns on and produces air but it blows hot air. We realized that we had just missed the one-year Full Warranty period but the unit still qualifies for the Limited Five Year Warranty which the manufacture will replace the compressor (parts only). I looked up for Royal Sovereign's website for a service contact and they showed a total of 10 in California. I called two and were told by both that they do not service Royal Sovereign anymore. I called a 3rd repair shop which is approximately 45 miles from my house. I made an appointment and brought the unit in. They informed me after a week that there was a problem with the compressor and the condenser. Even though, the parts will be supplied by Royal Sovereign but their labor would cost $250. For the price, we could almost purchase a new portable air condition.
I don't understand how the unit would stop working after one year or to be exact, 3 months of usage. I am frustrated that Royal Sovereign does not have enough service locations which made it very difficult to compare price on the repair. The next closest repair shop to me is approximately 60+ miles away and a totally different direction from the first shop that gave me the estimate. And we only live 20 miles East of downtown Los Angeles!

Royal Sovereign ARP-1008 Portable Air Conditioner 8,000 BTU Review

Royal Sovereign ARP-1008 Portable Air Conditioner 8,000 BTU
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, the good - it is utterly simple to set up with excellent instructions. It glides smoothly across the floor and has an ample cord. I purchased this one because of one I bought several years ago that has run like a charm. The cooling ducts angle well and move smoothly.
Why only 3 stars you ask? Some moron designed this air conditioner to run only with a remote; there isn't even a power switch on board. If you lose the remote (we all know that never happens), break the remote or it ceases to function you have no air conditioner. Would I have bought it knowing that - NO and Amazon should be ashamed for not making that little feature clear in their product description. Too bad as this is a 5 star unit in 3 star clothes.

The other reviewer, Alesia, summed up my experiences to a tee (i.e., abysmal). All I will add is that it does not cool worth a darn. I live in Vancouver, BC - not exactly the AZ desert, and it couldn't cool a small with the outside temperature at 85 F if its life depended on it. And it did...trashed it last week.

Ideal for rooms up to 400 square feet, this portable air conditioner delivers a 12,000-BTU cooling capacity and an energy-efficiency rating of 12.44. It also functions as a dehumidifier, removing up to 65 pints of moisture from the air per day (the dehumidifier operates automatically in AC mode). During the cooling process, its self-evaporating system extracts water from the air into the unit. Most of this water then gets recycled and used to cool the cooling coils for more efficient operation. The air conditioner comes equipped with a 3-1/5-pint water tank and two fan speeds, as well as a digital thermostat with remote control, which makes it simple to use. Choose between continuous operation or the programmable timer, which can be preset up to 12 hours. The unit also provides a 64- to 90-degree F thermostat, a washable air filter, an activated carbon filter to help remove odor, a built-in water tank or extended water tube for continuous drainage, and an easy-grip handle and large casters for convenient mobility. Other highlights include an LCDI plug, fire-resistant PVC plastic housing, a rotary compressor, directional air discharge louvers, and an extendable exhaust hose (up to 5 feet). The unit requires exhaust hose installation, and all standard accessories come included. Weighing 70 pounds, the air conditioner measures 17 by 17 by 30 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Haier 12,000 Portable Air Conditioner Review

Haier 12,000 Portable Air Conditioner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have two of the Haier 12,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioners, each with a heater and three speeds. Have been using them for three seasons and really like them. It takes less than 15 minutes to snap hoses on connectors, place in window, add foam strip to prevent air & bugs from coming in. No heavy lifting! I suggest putting some no odor silicone spray [food grade from Amazon or Grainger Industrial Supply] or Armor All which has some silicone in it, on the parts that snap together. It makes it easier next season to put on and remove the hoses too. Also, run a bead of silicone sealant around the tiny space between the hose connector that fits into window adapter. No air or bugs can get in that way. I'm writing almost everything that isn't in the owner's manual.
Fortunately there are two collapsible 5 ft (1.5 M) tubes/hoses--one for air intake and one for heat & humidity exhaust. Note: one tube portable ac units are much less efficient than this Haier and draw hot, outside air in thru cracks or openings somewhere in your home or apartment. They also take longer to cool than this two hose ac. Haier did it right with this product. One improvement needed is a 24 hour timer instead of the 12 hr one at present.
If it is very humid often (59% INside!) this Haier unit may occasionally require draining from a plug in the back near the bottom into a flat pan. I usually wheel the unit on its easily movable casters to the top of stairs; then, put a pan on the next step down; untwist the drain plug and let the water fill the pan. Otherwise, you need to use a flat, two inch high pan to collect the water. Although we have 88%+ humidity here in the Northeast, my draining of the water has been usually limited to at the end of the season. Some humidity does blow out the exhaust hose. One thing: the window adapter fits windows up to 36 inches. One of my windows is 38" which means I have to fill in the extra space with cardboard or foam. The D.I.Y.'er might get some longer plastic, heat-bend it and make it fit better. We have double-hung windows (lift up &/or pull top one down) with screens & storm windows (insulates somewhat in winter). I set the window adapter with snap-on/off hoses to blow through the screen. It adds some security as the storm window is locked in place above the screen opening. You should put a bolt locking device (see locksmith or hardware store) above or beside the opening to prevent a thief from opening your window from the outside. It should be instantly openable in case of fire and need to escape.
Don't expect a portable AC to do as well as an in the window or wall unit. 12,000 btu portable AC = about 8,000 btu in a window/wall Air Conditioner (by experience). And, it will not get as cold. Although I measured the temperature (digitally) coming out of the unit at 61 degrees F (16 degrees C) it will not make the air in the room as cold as a regular air conditioner. The heater setting for the cooler or cold winter isn't worth the money. Better is a $20.00 ceramic heater with fan from one of the stores or Amazon. I don't use the built-in heater as it doesn't produce much heat and is noisier than the ceramic one. The unit has a setting to use alone as a dehumidifier, However, a separate 40+ pint (19+ liter) a day dehumidifier is a better choice. I use one of those in our basement with a 15 foot garden hose attached to the drain plug. Without a dehumidifier things get mildew, smelly and moldy with 70% humidity. A word to the wise!
If you live in some dry areas of the country, a "Swamp Cooler" (love that name) is the item for you. It cools by evaporation of water and adds the humidity to the air. Others may prefer a central air conditioner with the addition of an in-room humidifier for those desert areas of the country. Remember that a humidifier in the winter (used October thru May, in Northeast USA) prevents dry & cracked skin, cracked wooden furniture, needless coughing. And, if you get a cold/flu or pneumonia, it makes it much easier on your lungs, pain, energy [coughing lowers energy], let alone skin. A humidifier even helps keep a piano in tune longer. Add a air purifier with fan & filter for best results. Those ozone units are bad for your health; but, that is another review to write! The Haier remote works fine, although its buttons aren't clearly labeled as to what each does. Save your owner's manual in a zip bag. At the end of the season remove the hoses and cover your Haier with a large plastic bag to keep the dust off/out. Hope that helps you.

DeLonghi PAC C120 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Review

DeLonghi PAC C120 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner

Although heavy and probably larger than a window air conditioner, this unit is worth every penny. I have a home office with a server and a couple PCs in it and this unit keeps the room as cold as I want it! I have central air - but my office always seemed stuffy. Now the entire upstairs loft is as cool and comfortable as the rest of the house. The unit vents outside - and even with my sliding windows, the venting area is narrow and does not obstruct my view. It can also be vented directly through the wall, but that seemed a little extreme to me. It is probably as loud as a window unit and has a fan only mode and a de-humidifier mode. The temperature is set by degrees, not some dumb low-medium-high setting. It plugs into a normal household plug and could be moved to another area of the house with little trouble. I am thinking, if the power went out, this unit could be used with the generator, we would not cook like the last time we lost power in the summer.

With a cooling capacity of 12,000 BTUs, this portable air conditioner means any room of the house can stay comfortably cool in the summer months. The unit's durable indoor/outdoor castor wheels and built-in side carry handles make it simple to transport from the living room during the day to the bedroom at night, while its easy-to-use electronic controls and LCD display ensure effortless operation. Choose from an automatic fan function or three fan speeds, depending on the personal comfort level desired. It also provides a dehumidifying mode to help reduce excess moisture in the air and a fan-only mode for air circulation without cooling. Other highlights include quiet operation thanks to its high-efficiency compressor and components, an adjustable thermostat with a 24-hour programmable timer for energy savings, air filtration to promote cleaner indoor air, and dripless operation, which means no bucket to empty. A full-function LCD remote control comes included, as well as a window bracket and exhaust hose for easy installation with no tools required. The portable air conditioner measures approximately 18-1/5 by 14-3/5 by 30-2/5 inches.

Royal Sovereign ARP-5012XH Portable Air Conditioner Dual Hose Heat/Cool 12,000 BTU
Average Reviews:

I purchased this unit online about 1.5 yrs ago. The sleek design is cool as is the air it produces. The initial setup time was around 30mins (you must assemble the plastic hoses and mounts), but I managed to get it running within 10min this year. The product works as designed and keeps my living room/kitchen at a constant 73 degrees (easily 400sq ft). I have not emptied any water from the drip valve in the rear so maintenance isn't an issue. The system is a bit noisy and definitely heavy (does have wheels) but we are talking 12,000 BTU. I would recommend this product to a friend or family member.

I use this in my bedroom. It gets really hot, especially in the summer, and I also have a lot of electronic equipment(av receiver, Xbox 360, PS3, LCD tv, some halogen lamps, etc.) and to top that all off I am really hot natured. So I needed something to keep the room cool. This thing does it effortlessly. The temp. in my room used to climb up to 75ºF, now with the SoleusAir it stays at around 66-68ºF, just how I like it. On a side note, my central A/C went out last summer and it got up to 83ºF in my house, but the SoleusAir kept it at a cool 68ºF in my room. So you can count on it even under the most demanding loads. It also has a built-in heater as well and it heats as well as it cools. So this is really an all-in-one unit. The only downside(along with any other portable a/c unit) is that you must run 2 hoses(one exhaust, one intake) to a window. It comes with a window installation kit, but I live near a busy street so I can sometimes hear outside noise... but it's not too bad.
But I would highly recommend this product.

DeLonghi PAC700T Pinguino Portable Air Conditioner Review

DeLonghi PAC700T Pinguino Portable Air Conditioner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the PAC600T (one step below this unit) from Amazon one year ago. When it arrived, I filled the tank with water, inserted it in the unit and my floor was covered with water less than a minute later. Turns out the unit's plastic base housing was cracked during shipment. Amazon replaced the unit, with the same results for the second unit. At that same time, there must have been lots of returns because Amazon stopped selling the unit. I stepped up to this unit with its slightly higher BTUs and hefty price.
The unit arrived fine, no leaks after filling with water, and I used it most of last summer (in a 14' x 20' room with average height ceiling). The unit puts out cool, definitely not cold, air. The only way to really use the unit is to get it started when the temperature isn't too high, then keep it running. I don't think it would be able to cool a warm room. It simply isn't overly powerful. That may have to do with the fact that it operates at 110 volt, rather than 220 like many AC units that are built into apartment walls.
The unit has been sitting behind my couch all winter. When I went to use it this year, the removable plastic water tank was cracked. It was emptied at the end of the season and not exposed to excessive temperatures, so I don't know what that's about.
I assumed that with the high BTU (and price tag), this would be the unit to use. But I'm going to try one of the less expensive units this year and check out its performance.

Piece of garbage.
(side note: the first one that got sent to me leaked water everywhere; I sent it back and received a working unit)
It's as if someone designed this thing aiming specifically for annoyance and inconvenience.
The manual is full of contradictions and outright lies; the unit needs draining far more than they suggest and the process is the most ridiculous thing I've ever tried to do.
The drainage spout is located about a half inch off the ground and the manual suggests that you not move the unit while it's full (I don't know exactly how much water it holds, but it takes a loooong time to drain).
This forces you to do one of two things; spend an hour filling up and emptying the tiny little tray they give you, or come up with some of your own creative and time saving drainage methods because you WILL have to drain this thing every 4-6 hours.
Plus, this unit is massive and a HUGE pain in the ass to move unless you can roll it to wherever you're emptying it.That being said, if you can rig up a way for it to drain continuously, it works like a charm.

Royal Sovereign ARP-9009TL Ultra Compact and Lightweight Portable Air Conditioner Review

Royal Sovereign ARP-9009TL Ultra Compact and Lightweight Portable Air Conditioner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have researched and reviewed some websites who manufacture this product. I was tricked. This product is not working like regular air conditioner for the window. This product has 9,000 BTU for my extremely small room. It cannot make my room any colder. It had been working like regular fans which generates barely to cool the room even though it is 9,000 BTU. It emits some chemical and odor. I think I actually got sick from it since I got URI (upper resp. infection) days after I got this product.
I have pressed the temperature to very bottom which is at 65c but the current temperature on indicator usually cannot go under 78c. It shows that my room didn't get any cooler from this product.
I returned it and bought a regular air conditioner for the window with 6500 BTU at 150.00 dollars. Guess what? It works MUCH BETTER! No foul scent and my room is now much COLDER.
Not all mobile A/Cs are perfect yet.

Amcor ALTL12000EH 12000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Heat Review

Amcor ALTL12000EH 12000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Heat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased a NanoMaxA12000EH several years ago to cool a large bedroom of around 300 sqft. The equipment is advertised for up to 400 sqft. Presumably more than adquate for this application. Window units are sized at about 20 btu per sqft or in this case 6,000 btu. To be immediately noted is that it takes a lot more btu per square foot for this and other portable air conditioners to achieve the same outcome as a window unit half the size in btu.
So how did it work? Not well at all. On a hot day starting with the room in the mid 80 degree range with say 60 percent humidity it cannot cool the room down. It may drop the temperature 1 degree per hour. If we cool the room with a fan it can drop the temperature from say 78 degrees to 74 degrees in 2-3 hours. It of course provides comforting cool air if you focus on you.
A call to AMCOR support revealed that the technician thought I was definitely at or above the limit of its capacity at 300 sqft.
In use it is easy to see why it is slow. It adds considerable heat load to the room through the exhaust tube and in particular the large plastic attachment the connects the tube to the window vent. This plastic can be very hot to the touch and it is of course inside the room. The tubing is less hot however I have it as close to the window as possible (2 feet) to minimize the length the tube is played out. Presumably a long stretch of tube will also generate a lot of heat like a dryer duct. In sum, the unit is adding substantial heat load to the room severely compromising cooling efficiency. I addressed this issue by placing wet towels on the tubing and large plastic fitting. So long as they are wet they do keep it cool.
I also learned from the service rep you cannot operate the heating feature without also having the tubing installed in the window. Of course on a cold day you probably do not want an insert in your window.
Since the compressor, fans, etc. are inside the room it makes more noise than a window unit.
The filters (3) are white so it is easy to miss seeing that they should be cleaned.
On the plus side it is easy to roll around and install the vent in the window although I had to upgrade the insulation around the edge of the window insert to keep hot air that was vented circulating back into the room. I looks nice and it avoids having an unsightly window unit sticking out of a front window.
In sum, if you want cooling you are well advised to get a good window unit many of which are not that hard to insall. This unit would be best used in a room of 200 square feet or less.

Ideal for average-size rooms up to 400 square feet, this portable air conditioner features a 12,000-BTU cooling and heating capacity. During the cooling process, its self evaporating technology extracts water from the air that passes through the unit. Most of this water then works to help cool the machine for more efficient operation. Approximately 65 to 70 percent of water condensed evaporates out with the exhaust air, reducing the hassle of constantly having to empty the water tank. For the small amount of remaining water, the unit provides a built-in water tank with a drain outlet and a water tube. When the tank fills, the compressor stops operating and the power light will flash to indicate that the tank should be emptied.
The air conditioner also comes equipped with two fan speeds for fast or normal cooling, an LCD digital temperature display, full thermostat control, and electronic controls with a remote control. Choose between continuous operation or the programmable timer, which can be preset up to 12 hours. Other highlights include a 62- to 90-degree F thermostat, moisture removal of 65 pints per day, a washable air filter, and an activated carbon filter, as well as adjustable louvers to control air flow, built-in casters for convenient mobility, and an extendable exhaust hose (up to 5 feet). A window and wall exhaust kit comes included, and the air conditioner must be vented via the included exhaust hose. Please note, if the room has a heat source such as direct sunlight or computer servers, the coverage area may be reduced. Weighing 68 pounds, the air conditioner measures 16 by 15 by 30 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty and a five-year warranty on the compressor.

I can't say I've had as good an experience as others reported here...the main problem I've discovered is that the compressor only cycles on for about seven minutes at a time, followed by fifteen minutes during which the machine simply operates as a fan and blows in hot air from outside. Company info on their web site indicates that this is being done to prevent the compressor from overheating--unfortunately, this results in the compressor remaining cool while my small studio apartment (only 200 sq feet) remains too hot. I don't know if other units have similar limitations, but I would hesitate to recommend this product on the basis of my own experience. Hope this is helpful to anyone looking to make a buying decision...

Ordered this because of the great capacity (11,500 BTU) but was disappointed when I finally had to use it. Purchased it late 2009 but didn't need it until summer 2010. Probably should have hooked it up and tried it right away, but didn't.
Fan works great but the unit doesn't get cold at all, just blows air that is a little bit cooler than the room. I checked all the setting and read the manual so pretty sure it's not pilot error.
Went to Costco and got a Sharp unit for less that works great. I'd send this back but too late so I'm stuck. Don't buy this unit, it doesn't work.

I have some mixed feelings about this cooler. Sure, it works great and is well-made. I have a three car garage and it does a respectable job. Unfortunately, customer service at the manufacturer level is horrid.
I emailed AdobeAir (the manufacturer) and never received a response when the motor went bad. I needed new pads as well, and I was stuck. I called AdobeAir on the phone. Some impolite lady took a message, and I never heard back.
Getting parts for a product is just as important as the quality of the product itself. I am looking for another evaporative cooler for my garage and possibly one for the house, but it won't be a MasterCool or anything else from AdobeAir.
Good work folks. You really know how to lose a customer. I will tell everyone I know about your nonexistent service.

I have a 15x16ft room I'm using this unit in. Yeah, the square footage is a lowly 240sq ft., but my other 10000btu unit from royal sovereign couldn't cut it. My apartment is on the 3rd floor with large windows and close to non-existent insulation (early early 1900s building).
I had the royal sovereign ARP-1000EX, which is 10000 BTU's, but that thing couldn't keep up with my apartment. It would create cool air, but wouldn't cool the room. Besides that it was HELLA loud.
With the ARP-5012XH unit, it is about 10 times quieter on max fan speed than the other unit on the lowest fan speed. I can watch TV at a normal volume, and I can have a conversation on the phone with this unit on.
Also, this thing cools very effectively. I don't know what is different than the other unit, but it works. The air that comes out of it is VERY cold, and cools my room very effectively. It even cools the room while the door is open the whole time! That's how nice it is.
I highly recommend this!! It works very nicely and it looks very upscale and expensive also. It is easy to use, and if you get this same unit with the heat pump, it will heat up your room too! (It heats up my apartment up nicely in San Francisco, but I doubt it'll do the job in say Minnesota)

Pros:
This unit is 7,000 BTUs, the smallest of any portable unit I've found. Perfect for when you need a portable unit, but don't want one powerful enough to cool an airplane hanger! (This would be a con, however, if you do need a more powerful model.)
This unit is also the least expensive portable unit I've found. A definite plus if you, like me, need several to cool all the rooms in your apartment but can't use a window unit due to bars on the window that don't pot-belly out.
The absolute best feature is self-evaporating feature that means you never have to empty a water container! I cannot stress this point enough! On my other units, I have the choice of having to constantly empty the small built-in water tank, or draining the water into a bucket that won't automatically shut off the AC when it's full (and thus risks overflowing onto the floor if I forget to empty it.) This Haier is the one I leave on overnight to keep my bedroom cool, so it's especially reassuring to know I won't wake up to a flooded apartment.
Cons:
The window kit isn't as good as the one that came with the other brand of portable AC I have. It requires more assembly and doesn't have very good directions, though I figured it out after only one mistake. (The grate will stay securely if you put the screws through the part that blocks the rest of the window and have them end in the grate, but not vice-versa.) There was also no foam included to create a secure seal in the window. I had enough left over from my other AC units, but you might have to buy some or improvise. Lastly, the part that blocks the rest of the window looks like it's supposed to be able to be screwed securely at the right width, but that doesn't work. If you need to force it to stay at the right width, you'll need to improvise.
When the end of the exhaust tube connects to the window kit, there are a couple of holes that I covered with duct tape. No biggie, easily fixed, but still a design flaw.
The last difficulty I had was with the exhaust tube. I was hoping to put it in the room where the bars are on the inside of the window instead of the outside, but the end of the tube was too big to fit. I'm going to have to use one of my other units that has a longer, narrower endpiece to fit through the bars. But unless your apartment's window bars are as odd as mine, this won't matter for you.
Overall:
I wish I'd gotten two of these and one of the other brand instead of vice-versa! And the only reason I prefer the other brand for one of my rooms is because of the aforementioned problem with fitting the exhaust tube's endpiece through the bars.

I heartily recommend this unit. I live in a condo in Southern California that is older and doesn't have A/C. The past two months California experienced a record breaking heat wave. The temp in our beach city reached a blistering 108 with a humidity level to match. It varied between 78-98%. The heat was so bad you'd feel like you were breathing water when you walked outside. I put this unit in my bedroom. Guess where my animals and I spent all of our time while at home? I don't have to watch any water levels, I turn it up as high (cool) as it will go and run the unit 24/7. I totally recommend this unit for a room unit. No, it doesn't have enough BTU's to cool say, a living room, but a room the size of my bedroom (15.6 x 11.6)? It works wonderfully! Buy one and you'll stay cool in whatever room you choose to place this unit as long as the room size fits with the specs.
****07/21/2009**** Had to add a note: This thing is still GOING STRONG! Works as well now as it did the first day I got it. Yet, an Amcor I purchased AFTER this Haier just died in the middle of a scorcher. I am so impressed with the durability, lasting power, ease of use and portability I bought another unit (14,000 BTU) for the living room. Did the same modifications I did with the original . . . I use foam core to "extend" the window pieces, so they will fit my sliders. The new one also is WONDERFUL. It cools the entire living room to the point when guests open the front door the first thing out of their mouths is "Wow, this feels so good!" Can you tell I am happy with Haier?
