I use this in my bedroom. It gets really hot, especially in the summer, and I also have a lot of electronic equipment(av receiver, Xbox 360, PS3, LCD tv, some halogen lamps, etc.) and to top that all off I am really hot natured. So I needed something to keep the room cool. This thing does it effortlessly. The temp. in my room used to climb up to 75ºF, now with the SoleusAir it stays at around 66-68ºF, just how I like it. On a side note, my central A/C went out last summer and it got up to 83ºF in my house, but the SoleusAir kept it at a cool 68ºF in my room. So you can count on it even under the most demanding loads. It also has a built-in heater as well and it heats as well as it cools. So this is really an all-in-one unit. The only downside(along with any other portable a/c unit) is that you must run 2 hoses(one exhaust, one intake) to a window. It comes with a window installation kit, but I live near a busy street so I can sometimes hear outside noise... but it's not too bad.
But I would highly recommend this product.

Haier CPN12XC9 12K Portable Air Conditioner Review

Haier CPN12XC9 12K Portable Air Conditioner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this in June when I couldn't take the NYC heat anymore. My window unit broke at the end of last summer, and due the prohibitively expensive delivery/installation costs in NYC for a 4th floor walkup apartment with extra wide windows, I decided to get a portable standing A/C-- my first.
I'm sure a lot of the issues I'm pointing out here have to do with the fact that portable units are just not as efficient as window units, but this 12,000 BTU unit does not cool my apartment nearly as quickly as my mighty little 8,000 BTU window unit used to. The nice thing about the portable unit which is an advantage over my old window unit is that while I have it installed in my bedroom, I can blast just my bedroom only (8 ft x 14 ft) by shutting the door, or angle it to cool the living room only (20 ft x 22 ft), or to hit both rooms. The bedroom gets cool enough when I shut the door so that the unit is cooling my bedroom only (and the temperature reading on the unit can get down to 73 degrees); it is a challenge to completely cool the living room area on a really hot day, but that was an issue even when I had my window unit (also installed in my bedroom). When I do try to cool just the living room (essentially dragging the unit to the doorway of the bedroom and blasting it only into the living room), while the living room can sometimes cool down to a comfortable temperature, the bedroom then heats up because the PVC exhaust pipe leading from the unit to the bedroom window gets quite hot.
It is also very noisy. The first week, I could hardly fall asleep because of the noise. It is like sleeping near a generator. I guess I've gotten used to it by now, but I definitely think that it could have been designed better to be quieter. Also, even on low speed, it's just as loud as when it's on high speed.
Beware that all portable units will require some kind of exhaust pipe to be connected to the window so that the heat generated by the unit can escape. You only need a small window, however, much smaller than an A/C would need, so if you have a basement apartment with a small window, you'd probably still be able to accommodate this unit.
If you have a living situation that allows a window unit to be installed more easily and inexpensively, I would certainly recommend that. For those who cannot install window units for whatever reason, this portable unit is OK, but I wonder if there are more efficient, quieter units out there. Also, I sometimes wonder if I made the right decision to keep the unit because portable A/C's cost more than window units, and maybe I should have just sucked up the outrageous installation charges associated with a window unit which may have been a more efficient cooling system.

Haier HPAC9M Portable Air Conditioner with 9,000 BTU Cooling Capacity Review

Haier HPAC9M Portable Air Conditioner with 9,000 BTU Cooling Capacity

I heartily recommend this unit. I live in a condo in Southern California that is older and doesn't have A/C. The past two months California experienced a record breaking heat wave. The temp in our beach city reached a blistering 108 with a humidity level to match. It varied between 78-98%. The heat was so bad you'd feel like you were breathing water when you walked outside. I put this unit in my bedroom. Guess where my animals and I spent all of our time while at home? I don't have to watch any water levels, I turn it up as high (cool) as it will go and run the unit 24/7. I totally recommend this unit for a room unit. No, it doesn't have enough BTU's to cool say, a living room, but a room the size of my bedroom (15.6 x 11.6)? It works wonderfully! Buy one and you'll stay cool in whatever room you choose to place this unit as long as the room size fits with the specs.
****07/21/2009**** Had to add a note: This thing is still GOING STRONG! Works as well now as it did the first day I got it. Yet, an Amcor I purchased AFTER this Haier just died in the middle of a scorcher. I am so impressed with the durability, lasting power, ease of use and portability I bought another unit (14,000 BTU) for the living room. Did the same modifications I did with the original . . . I use foam core to "extend" the window pieces, so they will fit my sliders. The new one also is WONDERFUL. It cools the entire living room to the point when guests open the front door the first thing out of their mouths is "Wow, this feels so good!" Can you tell I am happy with Haier?

I have never seen such a dumb electronic device for regulation of air.
I still don't understand how this thing can decide to not trigger the air con while it is needed. Then suddently it may decide to do it... and depending on how you turned it on/off, its behaviour will change.
Just to say that the computer regulator for heater/air con is just not working decently !
A big mistake to have acquired this Soleus device.
(even 1 star is too much)

For exceptional versatility and comfort throughout the year, this four-in-one portable appliance functions as an air conditioner, heater, fan, and dehumidifier. Use it as a 1350-watt air conditioner with 12,000 BTUs of cooling power for staying comfortable in the summer, then in the winter switch over to its 1160-watt heater mode, which uses Heat Pump technology to deliver 12,000 BTUs of heating power. The user-friendly electronic control panel makes it easy to select the mode of operation, the ideal room temperature from 61 to 88 degrees F, and the fan speed--low, medium, or high. A handy remote control comes included, which allows for changing the settings from across the room. The unit can also function as an evaporative dehumidifier, removing up to 60 pints of moisture from the air a day to help maintain ideal comfort levels. Its Auto mode provides added convenience where the unit operates as a heater when the room temperature falls below 68 degrees F, as a dehumidifier when the room temperature sits between 68 and 80 degrees F, and as an air conditioner when the room temperature reaches above 80 degrees F. Other highlights include Sleep mode, a 24-hour automatic on/off programmable timer, optional oscillation, and an easy-access permanent air filter. Best of all, its portable design means there's no need for permanent installation. Simply connect the exhaust hoses to an open window using the included window-exhaust kit. The unit's efficient self-evaporating technology means there's no need to continually drain the unit. In extremely humid conditions, however, condensation may collect in the built-in tank if it can't evaporate fast enough. The compressor will automatically shut-off if the tank reaches capacity, and a "full" indicator will alert users to the need for emptying the tank. Accessories include two exhaust hoses, two hose adapters, two window-kit adapters, a window kit with four sliding panels, two air intake and outlet covers, and an owner's manual. Ideal for the home or office as an air conditioner, heater, fan, and dehumidifier, the appliance measures 18-1/2 by 19 by 32-1/4 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Arrived with plastic cover cracked and taped together. The cover is very flimsy and difficult to align in replacement. Otherwise, I am pleased with performance. It is not too noisy and cools a former attached garage which has been converted into a home gym and office. Only gets 4 Stars because of cover problems. I have owned it for one month.

I was skeptical at first for a brand that was unknown to me. But since it was a heatwave this was the only one around that met all the specs that I needed and it was for use in my unusally hot basement. Well what a plesant surprise! This little baby cools off my 2000 sq ft basement in mintues. I strongly recomend this unit. One bonus for me was the shape and size of the portabel vent. It was perfect for the small basement windows of my home.

I did not order this via amazon.com, I got it from another vendor who referred me to the manufacturer royal sovereign for service when the unit arrived with a defective hose.
I contacted the manufacturer and sent them the information they requested via fax. This took several tries but I finally got it through with a successful fax report.
Over a month went by and I did not receive the replacement hose, I tried to re-fax them and got rejected about 10 times in a row. My emails have not been returned.
I jury rigged the broken hose with a replacement dryer hose from the hardware store and the story continues. The unit itself will blow alot of cold air, but thats only when its working. It fills up with water far too often, and at one point I found the entire radiator unit completely caked in ice. To 'ice' the cake so to speak this thing is as loud as an 18 wheeler in your living room. You can hear it, annoyingly sometimes even feel it shudder, 2 rooms away. Finally I noticed an enormous hit on my electric bill as the unit is NOT energy star rated.
I would not recommend this to anyone, spend the 2 or 3 hundred extra and get a name brand unit - I am sure you will be happier.

Whynter Eco-Friendly 12,000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner with Heater, Frost White (ARC-12SDH)
We bought this back in September and took it out again recently for the heater function.
Nicely designed unit that has a clean modern look. The display is a concealed LCD band that is simple and understandable without an overload information and meaningless statistics. Although easy to roll around, be sure to get help when lifting up above a foot. The window kit was good quality and overall setup was considerably easy. Just hookup the hoses to the kit and fit the kit snugly into the window opening.
Cools wonderfully. I use it specifically in the baby's room and occasionally in the study. The dual hose design helps with the energy efficiency and overall cooling or heating out. Both rooms are about 18x18 and this unit has no problem cooling down a 95F room to a comfortable temp in less than 30 mins. I'm surprised that the cooling throughput of this unit is actually 20%-30% faster than another 14000 BTU that I have. Nothing scientific but even my wife notices the significant difference.
The heating option is not for heavy duty heating but it works perfectly as a spot heater when you don't want to crank central heat up too much.
To sum it up, this is a surprisingly efficient unit albeit slightly bulky but gives great bang for the buck.

Haier HLP140E 2-3/5-Cubic-Foot Compact Tumble Vented Dryer Review

Haier HLP140E 2-3/5-Cubic-Foot Compact Tumble Vented Dryer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have only had this dryer for about 10 days now, but I'm very happy with it! There is one other review for this dryer and in it they say it takes a long time for the clothes to dry... this is true. But I think it's to be expected since this dryer can simply be plugged into any outlet unlike a normal dryer. So, smaller dryer... less power... longer drying time. The reason I'm giving this unit 5 stars is because if getting out the laundry mat is as important to you as it was to me, then the extra drying time is more than acceptable. Also, this dryer is VERY QUITE, simple to use and set up. For the first 5 loads I just had the machine sitting on the floor near a window - I didn't even have the hose out the window. It did get my apartment a little warm and humid (not since I've put the hose out the window of course), but I'm just making the point that it is very easy to set up.
How long does it take to dry clothes? I'm still trying to get all the drying times down myself. But I'm having much better luck using the timed dry instead of the auto dry. On auto drying it does seem to take hours before it finally stops. So I've just started to try and figure how long certain things dry. For example, my sheets (fitted bottom and the top sheet) I'm drying now between 60 or 90 minutes. On both times the sheets are close to dry and hanging them up for a little longer is enough. I guess this review is a little premature since I don't have the dry times down yet. But I have the feeling 90 minutes will dry most stuff about 90 percent.
I think once I make the adjustment and get things organized drying will not be a hassle at all. And for me the extra fiddling I have to do while drying in my apartment is so much better than having the hassle of organizing taking everything out of apartment, waiting, digging up quarters, using a machine that has been used 10,0000 times instead my nice new machine.
UPDATE! THE SOLUTION! March 18, 2009
I have owned now the Haier Washer and Haier Dryer now for 5 months and I still am incredibly happy with my purchase. Even with the very long drying times with the dryer I love not having to go down to the W&Ds in the apartments laundry room.
But there is a solution to the long drying time with the dryer: Not long after posting my review C. Mok posted this comment (note: the spin dryer is very small 24 inches high, 14 inches in diameter - $134.00 + shipping - and only one company seems to sell them in the US):
C. Mok says:
May I suggest complementing your electric dryer with a small spin dryer? I bought a spin dryer on a whim when I remembered those were the only things used in Asia when I was there during the 80s. It has worked really well along side my small portable washer in my small apt. I hang dry most of my laundry except when I'm in a hurry. The spin dryer cuts drying time in half easily. Most spin cycle on washers go about maybe 600 - 800 rpm. The little spin dryer spins at 3000rpm. On a small wash (2 bath towels) it can spin out over a quart of water (over 32fl oz) in less than 2 minutes. That is a significant amount of water to evaporate using normal dryers. This will shorten your drying time and also save your clothes from heat damage from the prolong drying times. The only catch is trying to balance the load in the small spin dryer. I find it easiest to load all the heavy cotton clothes on the bottom and the lighter synthetic clothes on the top. Then give it a good shove and compress everything tightly down. Thats has worked really well for me. Check out [...]for a small spin dryer. Good luck!
I finally bought the spin dryer to work with my Haier dryer about a month ago and now washing and drying is very similar to using normal sized machines. Now there is just a very short middle step. I'll give examples of some of the basic loads I do each week.
Whites (socks 10-12 pair, underwear 10-12 pair, t-shirts 2-4):
After using the washing machine I put all clothes in the spin dryer. It is important to pack the spin dryer the way the manual suggests to prevent the dryer from bouncing around like R2-D2 in a bad mood. With small items like socks and underwear though, it's pretty easy, and after experience you will see what you can just drop and press in the SD (spin dryer)and what you need to wrap around. I does sound like this middle step is a pain, but after you use it a bunch of times, it's pretty easy and you don't give it a second thought. When you turn the SD on, it starts to spin, shakes a bit, then settles down and gets very quiet as it picks up speed. When you first use the spin dryer, you think, wow, i got ripped off! No water is coming out!.... But wait... after about 30 seconds water starts flow out. Dribbly at first but then... wow! With a full load, CUPS of water fill your water catcher. I have had between 1 and 5 cups of water (normally 2-3), depending on what I was washing. Once the water flow starts to slow down, you turn off the machine. It only takes 2-3 minutes.
I then take my clothes and put then in the Haier dryer and set the timer to 90 minutes. After 90 minutes the clothes are BONE DRY. I'm not sure how long it actually takes, but if the load is a little smaller there is a very good chance they will be dry after only 1 hour.
Darks: 2 pairs of pants, 6-8 T-shirts, 1 sweat shirt. In the SD, you do now need to put the pants in first, wrapped into the bottom of the machine, then the sweat shirt, then the shirts. Again, after 90 minutes - bone dry (as I said, they are probably done after 70 min? 80 min? I'm not sure because I just open it after the buzzer goes off.
Sheets (king size): OK, sheets are the only thing that I wash that can be slightly problematic. Because these are large items, they can make R2-D2 (the spin dryer) unhappy. You have to be the most careful here wrapping them into the spin dryer. In the Haier Dryer also, they can at times ball up. I normally wash 2-3 sheets at a time. Put them all in the spin dryer at once, then in the Haier dryer for 60 minutes EACH. I found that they don't ball up when you dry them separately. So yes, it would still take you 2 hours to dry 2 sheets.
The Washer and dryer are freakishly quite, but the Spin Dryer does have a lot of vibration at the beginning and end of it's 2-3 minute spin. Not a big deal because of the short time, but if you have thin floors and a neighbor under you, they might wonder what is going up every 45 minutes for 3 minutes while you are doing laundry. I suggest getting 1 or 2 thick squares of carpet.
UPDATE July 6th, 2009
I did just read the comment from someone who had problems ordering a spin dryer. I can't speak for that company other than mine arrived on time and in good shape and still works like new. I did go to the BBB link and did only see 1 complaint about the company.
For reasons I don't understand, I was only ever able to find 1 company in the US that sells a spin dryer. Maybe some enterprising individual might think of importing some from a country that uses them more and start a business selling them. I had a friend who told me that they are pretty common in Europe. (Note: I do remember I had to wait a month to order a spin dryer from the Laundry Alternative because they were out of stock. I'm not vouching for the company - just giving my personal experience.
November 6, 2009 UPDATE
I was curious to see how long I've had my washer and dryer to calculate how much I've saved in quarters (13 months x $20 = $260). It's been over a year so I thought I'd add a first year update. The washer, dryer, and spin dryer all work like new. Which is great, I'm not sure if I'm lucky or not, but in my case they are fine. I did make the decision not to use bleach early on. I'm not sure if that has made any difference.
As far as drying. I reread my review and while it is true, if you use the spin dryer before the Haier dryer your wash will be bone dry in 90 minutes, that is with a small-med load. If you fill the dryer to the max. It will take 2-2.5 hours to dry. I just make sure to do medium loads more often.
My mom told me a secret to drying sheets! I still dry one sheet at a time for 90 minutes, but my mom said, AND SHE WAS RIGHT, if you put in a DRY towel (I use a big one) the sheet does not ball up while it spins. This has made a big difference in drying sheets, which are a pain to dry. I also bought a retractable clothesline from amazon. So when I dry sheets, (I don't use the spin dryer for sheets because the sheets are so big they can make the spin dryer go out of balance), I hang one on he clothes line, and they dry 1 for 90 minutes. Then I take the one out of the dryer and put it on the clothes line and put the one one from the clothes line in the dryer. Sometimes I have to put a sheet in for another 30 minutes.
Also, you really do need pull out and clean out the filter after every load. It really makes the drying time MUCH faster because it allows the air to flow out of the machine. You have to clean the lint off the "catch" and also the black filter thingy. Someone posted that an improvement on removing the filter would make the dryer a lot better. I totally agree with that.
The bottom line is: It depends on your personality; which do you dislike more? Digging up quarters, piling up your soap on your clothes in a basket and making a bunch of trips to the laundry room once a week or setting up these crazy contraptions in your apartment and turning your laundry doing into an art form where you have to get creative and be a little unorthodox.

EdgeStar 14,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner for Server Room Review

EdgeStar 14,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner for Server Room
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My company recently bought this unit to replace the older AC unit we already had in our small server room, and the improvement was dramatic. Using the single hose configuration, it very easily keeps our server room (approximately 50 sq. feet) perfectly chilled to the proper temperature. The ease at which it is able to do so makes me certain that it would be just as effective in a much larger space, especially if one were to use the dual-hose configuration. Also noteworthy is that it is relatively quiet while running. With the door to the server room shut, the sound it produces is virtually unnoticeable from the offices we have just down the hall from it.
Set up took literally less than five minutes to complete. After unpacking it, all that was required was wheeling it into position, attaching the hose to the back, and plugging it in, and it was good to go. One minor caveat to note is that the small LCD display attached to the unit requires two AAA batteries to function. These are not included with this product, and the product page does not mention this.

Sharp 13,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote CVPD13PX Review

Sharp 13,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote CVPD13PX
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Is it quieter than a smilarly powered window unit that is 1/5 the price? Yes. Is it library quiet? Only when on fan mode only and at the lowest setting.
As an air conditioner operates, it dehumidifies the air. The water has to go somewhere. With a window unit, it drips down the side of the house to the ground. With this thing, it has to store it. Eventually, it fills and you have to drop what you're doing and empty it...what a mess. The drain is about 1 inch from the floor so you have to move it to the top of the stairs or something like that to drain it. Of course, with the one I have, the rubber stopper has a crack so it leaks. I first discovered this when there was a pool of water under the thing and puckered, ruined, wood floor under that.
This thing has a dryer-like hose that goes from the unit to a window. Barely touch it and it falls apart.
I wish I had the receipt. I would return it and get a cheaper, less pain in the ass, window unit.

This portable A/C works great. I sincerely doubt that it will really cool a 450 sq ft area but it does a great job for my bedroom upstairs...which is all I was really concerned with. My bedroom measures 13' x 12' or 156 sq ft and it takes about an hour to get from 85° F to 69° F. Setting it up was a breeze. The only problem I had was with the window exhaust kit. The expandable PVC plastic window mount wasn't long enough to cover the entire height of my bedroom window...it's about 5 inches too short. I had to cover that space with a piece of plastic that I cut to fit and duct taped in place. One thing I don't like about this unit is the placement of the exhaust hose...it's in the back. Some units have it on the top of the unit so that you can place the unit almost flush against the wall. The back of my unit sticks out about a foot and a half from the wall which makes getting around it a slight pain in the rear...but hey, at least I'll be cool this summer :). Another con...it doesn't have oscilating louvers. The louvers are fixed and can't be adjusted up or down. There are lateral louvers behind the front grill that can be adjusted manually from side to side with a slider. Oh...and one more thing...it's pretty loud when the compressor is running. It takes some getting used to.

I've owned and used several portable air conditioners over the years and I'm truly surprised at the speed of innovation over the last several years. Now it has come to a point where portable units have moved beyond your functional clunky beige contraption to something that has been designed to subtly blend into the surroundings. After deciding between this and a Delonghi (yes, I've finally arrived now that I can afford high-end appliances!) I decided to go with the more compact unit that was at a more affordable price point. I've been using this for about a month now and have been completely satisfied with nearly all aspects. One little gripe that I have, is the absence of handles on the side, it definitely is heavy too. It does however churn out very very cold air, look extremely slick and is a snap to use. The remote control has a myriad of functions that I will eventually use one day but for now, I just need the icey relief from a hot spring day.

Bought this from Bed Bath and Beyond using a 20% discount after going to PC Richards and Home Depot. This is for a 12x22' studio with 2 southern facing windows and a little used kitchen area. It replaced a 17 year old panasonic slide in window unit. Installation was straight forward but would have been easier if there was a sleeve. It is keeping the room at 73. So far so good. 3 more days of hi ninety's expected.

I got this to supplement the window unit I've been using for years and ended up just completely replacing the window unit.
Very robotic design, it stands around 3ft tall and is in fact rather slim once you take it out of the packaging. Came with all the necessary accessories to get it running immediately. Hooking it up and putting the hot air vent where my window A/C used to be was extremely straightforward.
We usually power it up after my daughter returns from pre-school and set the temperature to around 74F. It usually shuts off at about 2am when the room and outside temps are nice and comfortable. The air is extremely cold around the unit and gets a good sized room down to a nice temp really fast. It seems very quiet during the day with all the other sounds and my daughter has slept like a baby ever since we got it. I does emit a low hum when it's cooling but otherwise the fan sound is not noticeable to me. You can turn it on high for a few minutes but after awhile, that's overkill. It does a great job on a low fan setting once the room is almost at the temp you want it at.
I really like the idea of not having to use central air like in our old apartment. I think over time the utility savings will easily cover the cost of the unit. The best part is I can bring it with us if we ever move.
It's worked excellently for a couple of weeks now and I may just end up getting another for our own room.
