Dow Chemical Co. 157901 Great Stuff Insulating Foam Sealant for Gaps & Cracks Review

Dow Chemical Co. 157901 Great Stuff Insulating Foam Sealant for Gaps and Cracks
Average Reviews:

I thought that I read ALL of the fine print before purchasing and beginning to use this product. Upon trying to figure out how to clean the wand that is used to get the spray foam out of the can, I noticed in very fine print - "One time use only." This should be marked clearly on the front of the package so that people are aware of what they are purchasing. I was expecting to use this multiple times until the product eventually went bad. Why would I buy this to fill a small crack here and there, only to discover that if not used within two hours the bottle will seal itself shut? So basically, I just spent $6 to seal two very small openings. And I won't even know how well the product has worked until it cures in 8 hours. As well, the wand did not work consistently - The foam did not come out evenly and did not adhere to the surface, but rather when pulling the wand away, much of the foam came with it. Very messy. Not satisfied with this product at all.

Stanley Hardware 755885 Automatic Hinge Pin Door Closer, Bright Brass Review

Stanley Hardware 755885 Automatic Hinge Pin Door Closer, Bright Brass

The door to our basement opens in the middle of a long hallway. With 2 teenage boys and a TV/gameroom in the basement, you can imagine how much of the time the door spent blocking the hallway. We've had one of these on the door for about 4 years.,Stanley Hardware Automatic Hinge Pin Door Closer, Bright Brass #755885 We recently had to remove the door. When we put the door back up, we spent hours trying to put it back on so the door would close correctly. I searched the web for others. There is not one single product out there even remotely like this one. It does last forever but saving your directions may save you lots of time and frustration in the future. If this one broke, I would pay 10 times the price if necessary for another. It is worth every single penny.

Frost King R338H Sponge Rubber Foam Tape 3/16-Inch, Black Review

Frost King R338H Sponge Rubber Foam Tape 3/16-Inch, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My exterior door has a "kerf style" seal for the door to shut against but the door's gap on the inside is a little larger than I'd like and it seemed like a slight bit of air was leaking through so I was hoping for some kind of simple solution to fill the door jamb gap and try and seal it up a little better.
I've tried buying some rubber stripping from the hardware store for the door jamb part of the door (other MD and Frost King. None worked well, too thick in some places where the door smashes it or won't close. Most of the foam seals I saw were way too thick. Other seals would detach and the adhesive just wasn't very good.
I really thought I found the right seal and originally gave this a 5 star review. If it in the gap perfectly, it stayed on perfect for a few days, the adhesive seemed really good. Only thing I could say was that these seals are pretty unforgiving and would tear easily if you put it on crooked and tried to adjust it so buying extras just in case is a must, at least for me.

After a few weeks, not really any extreme cold or heat, although the door wasn't even hitting the tape it started to slide in places and looked like a dang black squiggily snake was on the door jamb and being a perfectionist it bugged the hell out of me. I tried some other seals, Frost King and, MD foam tape and seals ALL NOT VERY GOOD and none really seemed to work as permanent solutions.
What I DID end up doing is going to Home Depot and buying a Frost King Door Jamb Seal Kit that has a good quality rubber seal attached to aluminum that comes in a couple of different finishes that screws on the outside of the door. This allowed me to still continue to keep the original kerf style compression seal but also add another air barrier on the outside. The aluminum outer door jamb door seals will need to be cut with tin snips or some people say they use a hack saw but it was well worth it and now finally a permanent solution! Of course install it with the door shut and be careful not to get cut after cutting the aluminum.

Red Devil 0606 Zip-A-Way Removable Sealant, Clear, 10.1-Ounce Review

Red Devil 0606 Zip-A-Way Removable Sealant, Clear, 10.1-Ounce
Average Reviews:

I swear I am not from, nor do I know anyone from either company, but I have been using Dow's product for about 25 years now and it's great. I don't know what I would do without it.
This past fall though, I thought I'd try Red Devil's sealing product thinking it would be the same stuff but a little cheaper. What could be bad?
Well, It smelled worse, would not stick to the windows, and one had to be a football linebacker to get the stuff out of the tube. This became a panic since I had just the one day allotted to get approximately 200 windows caulked up at my two rental houses. All of my tenants were notified that this was the day and I had done my warm up exercises (both mental and physical) the day before. I was burning mad.
I tried to use the Red Devil, but could not get past the first tube. I had to throw it all down and run to the hardware store to get some DOW. Luckily, they had enough for me to do the job.
I will say that the store that sold the Red Devil returned my money promptly without hassle.
But! I will never sell me soul to the Devil again!

Purchased these handles for a craftsman style bathroom vanity that I built. Very handsome look, good paint. There was some variation in manufacturing quality but was easily dealt with in aligning handles on drawer fronts. Far less cost then could get at local major name home supply store even with the shipping.
Transaction was easy and delivery was on time as promised.
Will purchase again.

Attic Aire Whole House Fans - 54301 24In. W/Shut Wholehouse Fan Review

Attic Aire Whole House Fans - 54301 24In. W/Shut Wholehouse Fan
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've put in three whole house fans over the years. I installed this one a few days ago and am very pleased. I deviated from the instructions in two ways to reduce noise. First, I never follow the advice to put the fan in the middle of the house. I put it as far away from the master bedroom (no children) and around as many corners as possible. In this case, after finding I had an unusually tight-fitting garage door I put it in the ceiling of the garage. My door fits so tightly I can see no light around any edge, so the fan will produce a vacuum in the garage and pull through the door to the house if blocked open. That put it even farther from the MBR and around more corners than anywhere else in the house. Second, I stapled dark gray foam pipe insulation, the kind available in 6' lengths at HD or Lowe's, around the bottom and outside edge of the wooden fan frame. I cut one of the lengths of 1" insulation in half lengthwise and wrapped it over the bottom and up onto the side, maybe an inch, all around the base of the fan's frame. That prevented direct contact between the fan's box frame and any ceiling joist. I installed lumber between the joists under the frame and the fan sits on that (plus the teeny normal contact point on the center joist). I did not bolt the fan down (noise), but just put 1x4 lumber around the edge to keep it from going sideways. The 1x4 touched the foam also, on the sides. Since the fans pulls itself down as it pushes air up, floating the fan within the confines of the 1x4s around the edges holds it place nicely. With a separate 12-hour timer I can go to be with it running and it shuts off after things cool off. The fan is quiet enough that you can talk in a normal voice in the garage while it is running on high speed. By the way, it makes no difference where you install this thing as far as effectiveness goes. A vacuum in the house is a vacuum in the house. It will pull nicely from wherever you open a window or door. Installation took 5 1/2 hours plus about 1 1/2 for the timer because I had to fish an insulated wall and because I bought the wrong kind of electric box for the timer. If you use a timer, buy an electric box for "old work." It is made to install in the sheetrock, not to be nailed to a stud and will go much faster. Be sure to block open any door that can slam before you turn the fan on. Doors will slam shut HARD and maybe break something. I thought this fan might be too small, but it's not. When they tell you it's good for a 1500 sq ft house, it doesn't really mean anything. This house is considerably bigger than that. The size of fan has more to do with how many doors and windows you can open and still get enough air movement. With this one, you can get a very gentle breeze with one door plus one sliding glass door (we have no bugs). I really like my foam invention. This fan is noticeably quieter than my previous fans. You will need a helper to install the shutter. You can't hold it up and install a screw at the same time; at least I can't.

Stanley High-Velocity BlowerFan, 655702 Review

Stanley High-Velocity BlowerFan, 655702
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Every once in a while a product comes out and I am simply amazed at how useful it is. I used this fan recently and I can say that this is a great design that is well constructed. Though using this as a room fan works fine (there are three speed settings that allow you to adjust the airflow - the highest speed moves A LOT of air), what makes this fan truly shine is its directional capabilities. The stream of air being pushed by this fan is pretty narrow (focusing the air movement just where you want it) and the up/down swiveling nature of the base means that this thing can be pointed at the exact spot where air is needed (like a wet spot on the carpeting, or your back as you stand at your workbench on a steamy summer evening). The grounded outlets are simply icing on the cake.
I have seen this fan for significantly less at other stores (Menard's), so shop around. Otherwise, I recommend this as a well designed, quality product!

This product pretty much works as advertised. Works well in cutting off drafts between a door and its frame (not under the door). Also works decently well in cutting down sound. Don't expected it to completely sound proof the door, but it does muffle the sound of the TV and radio and voices from within the room. Make sure you thoroughly clean the surface you are applying this to. The adhesive will come off if you do not. I feel the adhesive could be stronger as well.

MAG #8760 Double Hung Wood window Lock Review

MAG #8760 Double Hung Wood window Lock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this for a friend who had older, double, wood windows with the original lock broken. Before installation of this lock, the window could be opened from the outside by sliding the bottom window UP, or the upper window, DOWN. This, however, was a very low-cost fix for that problem! After installation, it prevents either window from being moved from the outside. One of the great things about this product is that you can raise or lower the window to a certain point, to let air in, and set the lock to not allow it to be opened any wider. Great for security. The only thing that could have been better (and the only reason I didn't give it a 5-star rating) is that it didn't come with any installation directions. Perhaps the manufacturer assumes everybody knows how to put these things in, I don't know. But two single girls sure didn't know! Got it figured out though, and it's working very well.
