Kensington 62635F SmartSockets Portable Surge Protector with Built In Phone Line Splitter Review

Kensington 62635F SmartSockets Portable Surge Protector with Built In Phone Line Splitter
Average Reviews:

Years ago you could buy cheap, stand-alone surge protectors for your modem. Those days are long gone and now they try to get you to buy expense equipment that *includes* the surge suppressor. I've blown out a lot of suppressors over the years and that is all I want, in the cheapest package possible.
While I don't need the AC filter features that this unit offers, this *is* the cheapest thing that fulfills my needs. Buy several at one time to reduce the shipping costs per unit and these units are a steal.

Belkin F1U126-KIT Bitronics Auto Switch Kit Review

Belkin F1U126-KIT Bitronics Auto Switch Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Belkin Bitronics AutoSwitch Kit - F1U126 is a 4 to 1 switch. It can be configured to operate with 4 PCs sharing one peripheral (4 - 1 mode) or one PC connected to 4 peripherals (1 - 4 mode). Only when it is operating in 4 to 1 mode will he switch automatically route the PC to the peripheral. When operating in 1 to 4 mode the user must press the SELECT button on the unit to activate the desired port or alternatively run a small application on the PC to activate the desired port.
This is clear when reading www.belkin.com but not the case with many online store descriptions of the product which, at the time of writing this review, are minimal at best.
The system configuration I am using is one PC communicating to 4 peripherals (2 printers, a scanner, and a Zip Drive).
The documentation is straight forward but erroneous. I must admit the feel good factor was pretty low when reading the manual. It seems that it is very important that DIPSWITCH 1 is set to select '4 - 1 mode' or '1 - 4 mode'. Unfortunately the table and accompanying description do not tie up (or even make sense).
For example, the table reads
DIPSWITCH 1.
ON (down) : 1 - 4 mode.
OFF (up) : 4 - 1 mode.
The description for '4 - 1 mode' reads "Set the DIP switch to the OFF position (qu) in order to put the switch to 4 - 1 mode." The (qu) is actual exactly what you would see if you looked at (up) in the mirror. Nearly (qu) but not quite; the straight vertical on the 'u' is on the wrong side. I couldn't get my printer to do this if I tried.
The description for '1 - 4 mode' reads "Set DIP switch 1 to the ON position (up) in order to put the switch to 1 - 4 mode." Doesn't exactly tie up with the table.
Anyway, the table is correct.
Apart from that small, yet fundamental, problem the manual was OK.
The installation couldn't be much easier. Nothing much to do. Well that was the case for the two printers anyway. Just connect all the cables (the Belkin supplied cable between the switch and the PC, and the two printer cables from each printer to a port). No power supply needed (just as well as none was supplied). with DIPSWITCH 1 in the correct position the active port can be selected by pressing the SELECT button on the unit until the port's corresponding LED lights up. Pretty good so far (just remember to match the printer selection in the print dialog to the selected port at the switch).
Add the scanner and everything goes down the drain. (I must admit the scanner I bought is cheap and nasty (very nasty actually but that's another story).) The scanner wouldn't respond. A quick reboot made matters worse - the PC hung during boot up. Disconnect scanner - PC boots. Reconnect scanner - PC hangs. Hm... Quick advance to the Troubleshooting section of the documentation. "Lack of Power" in large unfriendly letters. Normally a visit to Radio Shack but I had a compatible supply in the house. with the supply connected the scanner worked provided (and this is important) the scanner port was selected on the switch at boot up (something to do with the pseudo SCSI driver the scanner software loads).
Now for the Zip Drive. No real problem here except that the port that the Zip Drive is on must be selected at boot up for the pseudo SCSI drivers to be loaded. Uh oh.
Here lies a small flaw in the whole concept. If the peripheral's drivers need to see the device at boot up then only one such device can be used during any one session. For example Zip and two printers, or scanner and two printers, but never scanner and zip in one session. However, I can live with that. Might be a problem for the guys trying to access one Zip from 4 PCs though - "excuse me but don't access the Zip drive because I am booting up my machine."
The Windows 9x Software is extremely minimal and somewhat disappointing. A tiny little app that lets you select one of 4 radio buttons corresponding to the four ports. I must admit I prefer to lean over and press the button on the unit, but I suppose if the switch was out of reach this app would be useful.
What I would have been really impressed with was a driver that hooked into (or replaced) the printer selection dialog box (a standard dialog I think) such that selection of a printer automatically selected the correct printer. Some one off configuration would be required and this scheme wouldn't help with Zip or scanner, but i still would have been impressed.
In conclusion: it works, I use it, and I am happy with it. Sure the operation of the unit is not ideal, but Belkin can't help the was Zip or scanner drivers work. They could improve the documentation though and work on the software a bit more.
Aug 25, 1999.

Tripp Lite SS7619-15 Multiple Outlet Strip w/ Surge Protection 15-Amp 24 outlets 15ft Cord 450 Joules Review

I mounted this power strip on my garage workbench. Six feet long with 24 outlets and integrated surge suppressor. This power strip is built like a brick telephone booth--outstanding quality. Easily mounted to the top of my workbench with three mounting clips.
Note that if you do mount a strip 'against the wall' leave at least one inch of clearance. There are many DC power supplies (cell phone chargers, drill chargers, etc.) that have a bulky transformer at the plug and will be wider than the strip.

I ordered this product when my previous surge arrest pro broke. But when I received it I discovered that it is an old product of this company. I am sorry to see Amazon.com selling obsolete products, rather than the very latest. The latest model APC PRO8T2 has been out for nearly a year, priced at the same amount, and I don't think you even offered it.

Belkin F1U200 4-Port USB Auto Switchbox (4 PCs to 1 Device) Review

Average Reviews:

I bought this device to hook two computers to one printer using two different operating systems. Works perfect. Simple setup, straight forward use. The lights are clear and easy to read. My only complaint is the additional cables I had to buy, they only send one extra cable. I think they should give you four since you can add up to four devices. The price was good for what I got. I would recommend this for even novice users of computers.

Network SurgeArrest 7 Outlet Review

An old RCA Engineer... Any APC product has always far exceeded my expectations. I just ordered one of these, and I thought I would pass along that this is the best surge protector APC offers with only 40v "let through" (most "good ones" are rated at 300V), also this one will "kill itself" if necessary to protect your equipment. Other protectors will loose their protection circuitry and keep your equipment connected. I have many stories from personal experience giving kudos to this company's products, but I gotta go.

Tripp Lite IB4-/220 IsPRar Ultra Surge outlet 6ft Cord 330 Joules
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a 5 star company that produces, possibly, the best surge protectors on the market today. I bought this unit for my work in South America (In Peru there are huge electrical fluctuations - I have seen a spike of 420 volt!).
With this Isobar, my computers always have been protected.
When I had a problem (I spilt coffee on the unit) the on/off light switch went out, but the surge protector continued. When I came back the USA and called about repairing it, the response was ... "don't worry, we will send you a new one this week." Wow! I expected a hassle, but I got excellent customer service. I would definitely buy another product from the company.
You pay more, but you truly get more. Highly recommended.

Don't let the "220" part of the model number fool you: this is for North American 110/120 voltage only, NOT for the rest of the world's 220/240 voltage. Also, it doesn't protect both Ethernet and modem cables simultaneously, it will protect one or the other only.
Other than the aforementioned caveats, it's a handy gadget and worth carrying to protect your electronics when travelling within the US.

January 1, 2010 I had a power surge in my house that fried my computer. After some research into the problem, I found out that the Philip's surge bar I was using never tripped and the surge went straight through it into my computer. (Dealing with Philips was the biggest load of bull ever and they never refunded me for my computer.)
I did a lot of research on surge protectors after that and I have replaced all my surge bars with this one. I have yet to have a power surge while I have had these installed, but from other reviews of people who have Tripp-Lite seems to be really easy to work with and they back up their products. Which after dealing with Philips, is very, very important.

I needed a new power strip for my home theater after adding a HTPC. I was previously using an old Monster PowerCenter HTS 2000 that I got for free several years ago and an APC office surge strip. I did a lot of research on various power centers, conditioners from Belkin, Panamax, Monster, Furman, APC and more. After encountering a lot of the same bizarre pseudo science and hand-waving one encounters in audiophilia and consulting with a couple of A/V professionals (not salespeople) I decided to skip that whole thing and just get a really high quality surge protector.
I've seen Tripp-Lite surge protectors in server rooms and IT workbenches for years and the form factor was appealing because it's about the most compact way to connect that many devices and still have room for all the various power bricks and adapters. So I took a chance and ordered this. I nearly got the 24-outlet Tripp Lite SS7619-15 Multiple Outlet Strip w/ Surge Protection 15-Amp 16 outlets 15ft Cord 450 Joules but I came back to my senses once I realized that my A/V rack is 48" wide and the larger version is a full six feet long.
In use it's actually very convenient to be able to group power plugs with all the space you have. I'm using 9 of the outlets now. As far as my sound and picture it's the same as when I used my fancy Monster strip which is exactly what I expected.
My one caveat with this thing is that it's not very friendly to home environments if you're concerned about hiding it. It's a full 4 feet long, the power cord is black and very thick. It works great behind a piece of furniture and the shape means it takes up less space than "side by side" models.
