10,000 BTU Mid-Size Room Air Conditioner with Electronic Controls (NO RETURNS) Review

* This is a 10,000 BTU with a 10.8 EER rating.
* Cools a large area quickly. I use this model in an area about 20 feet by 40 feet (about the size of a typical studio apartment and kitchen) with 9 foot ceilings. This single unit cools my living room area, foyer, hall, small dinning area, and small galley kitchen with no problems.
* I run it just about 24/7, even in the winter (use it on fan only as white noise to drown out the sound of my neighbors and because I can't control the heat in my apartment and it's always too hot). I've been running it 24/7 since May 2007 (a little over 2 years) with no problems.
* The timer feature is very convenient.
* The controls are easy to use.
* I like the remote control too. It's easy and convenient.
CONS:
* There's a feature that is suppose to allow you to let in outside air or not - called the "exhaust lever". It is nearly useless. I know this because the grounds keepers in my apartment complex come by once a week with their very smelly leaf blowers and lawn mowers and the fumes permeate my apartment even with this lever set so the outside air is not suppose to come in.
* As you can see by the photo I uploaded, the air intake grill gets dirty very fast and is very difficult to clean. To truly get it clean you must use a cotton swap dipped in window cleaner or similar time consuming task.
* The filter is very basic. No hepa filter or other fine filtration system. Easy to clean, but won't trap fine particles.
NOTE: I paid $320 for this at PC Richards in May of 2007. At this time, the ad above shows this at $199.97 - and I'd say that's a great price for this item. I see the Sharp AF-S80NX 8,000BTU Energy Star Window Air Conditioner is more expensive. Not sure why since it's less powerful. It might have different features. But I unless it has a filter that traps fine particles this model shown in this ad and less expensive is just fine.
I also have the smaller one in my bedroom - the Sharp S60NX, with 6000 BTUs but be careful when purchasing and comparing. Not all Sharp Air conditioners have the same features, even if they look the same. For example, with the lower BTUs in my S60NX I got a few less features. It does have the same look as the 10,000 and 8,000 BTU models, and it has the remote, but a few other minor differences. The point I'm trying to make is be aware of the details, but still both the 10,000 and the 6,000 BTU models were worth buying.

12,000 BTU Mid-Size Room Air Conditioner Review

(More customer reviews)Bought it for a room of approximately 700 square feet. Installation was straightforward and took about 1 hour. Unit is heavy so I would definitely recommend having a second person to help. It has all the basic features I was looking for (energy efficiency, remote control, 3 fan speeds, energy saving mode, etc.)
Most importantly, it cools the room quickly. Fan is somewhat noisy but tolerable. Not familiar with other brands for comparison.

The paint is bubbling off and has many sharp edges. My husband had to sand it down and repaint it because I was worried about my son's safety. I am also very disappointed that it isn't very high so you can't open your window all of the way because the kid can just climb over. You have to rig you window so that it can't open but maybe half way. It is alright, but if I had to do it over I would just spend the extra bucks and do it right.

(More customer reviews)I started out looking for a fishing knife to put in my new kayak. I was also looking for a safety tool to help free me from my vehicle if it ever went into the drink. I frequently drive over a bridge that goes 26 miles over water and I've seen too many vehicles fished out of the lake. This knife turned out to be the perfect combo.
A small disk inserted into the top of the blade near where it meets the handle makes it very easy to open, even when your hands are wet and slippery. The combo of half serrated and half sharpened edge makes it good for cleaning fish, cutting rope or other utility uses. The windshield shattering metal nib is on the butt of the handle and the seat belt cutter is right next to it. You can use both without having to open or turn the knife, a big plus in an emergency. It also has a very strong and long clip firmly attached to the handle. This is tight enough to slip onto the waist of your jeans or into a life vest pocket if you don't wear a belt. The knife is heavy enough to add some heft to your stroke should you ever have to break a windshield underwater. The metal looks similar to what might be used on one of their pistols and it is assembled with numerous star headed screws rather than rivets. You should be able to tighten or clean it as needed. Good purchase...patting myself on the back as I write!

Friedrich CP24F30 Review

(More customer reviews)I ordered and shipped this unit for my father. He has two air conditioners and lives in Texas (Houston Area) so it is pretty hot. While visiting him with my wife and son (we work overseas) I noticed that it was very hot inside the house. I asked if he was comfortable or just trying to save money. He said the AC just can't keep up with the heat, it will take a few days to "catch up" after we leave. I ordered this unit after I made some measurements for the one (to be replaced) that is in the kitchen and will actually cool the living area as well. The unit made it there and my father installed the unit in just under two hours. My father told me that it started cooling immediately, It cools very well and to hear him tell it he now can actually keep the house at 75 or so for him and his wife, cooler when they have company or entertain. I am very happy thus far with the unit. If you need alot of cooling in a small footprint this unit will not fail you. The remote works as well, all options are available as well. My father said he wanted this brand because the last one that he had (another house) is still working almost 25 years later!

(More customer reviews)You'd think that there should be no problem with the one aspect of this kit that is totally in the manufacturer's control: the ability of the tape and the film to stick together.
The first few years in this house, I used 3M 2144W Indoor Patio Door Insulator Kit out of habit, having lived for some years in Minnesota (one of the Ms in 3M). I use a goo remover and denatured alcohol to get rid of the traces of previous applications.
Last year, I noticed that this Frost King brand was about half the price (and still Made in USA) and figured I'd give it a try. With some difficulty similar to that described by the reviewer in NY who loves it, I was able to get it to stick to the frame and all was well.
This year, it took a little more work to get the tape to stick to the frame, but I was really surprised to find that after all that, the film won't stick to the tape!
Not sure what's going on... whether it's poor quality control and a bad batch or if they found someone to make their tape for less or what. (I saw one review on another site from someone in Michigan on another site who had the same problem.) Anyway, I'm not going to waste my time with this company's self-adhesive products again.

CP12F10 12%2C000 BTU Compact Programmable Air Conditioner Review

(More customer reviews)This is a remarkably bad AC. I purchased the CP12F10 because a) it uses R410-A refrigerant as opposed to ozone-damaging R22 (Freon) used in the CP12E10, and b) Friedrich's good reputation. But I am disappointed.
Friedrich describes the AC noise "as quiet as a gentle rain." More like a hailstorm. The fan blades hit the styrofoam shroud, creating a jackhammer sound. Even without the fan knocking, the motor is very loud. The four drill holes on the cabinet's right side where the frame curtain attaches are not in a straight line, so the frame curtain bends a little. One of the screws that fasten the evaporator is dangling because it is misaligned with the shroud. How does a company let an AC ship with an unattached screw dangling like that?
Overall, very poor construction. Something that I would expect from Haier, not Friedrich. Both brands are made in China anyway, so maybe I shouldn't expect a big difference.
The AC does blow lots of cool air, like a good 12,000 BTU unit should. But the jackhammer noise makes the CP12F10 unusable.
On a positive note, I bought the unit from J&R Music World thru Amazon and the shipping was very quick. And for an 86 lb. item, the shipping was still only $2.95! (Current J&R promotion) Unfortunately, now I have to return the AC unit, which will cost me $55 to ship UPS.

Lifetime 6411 8-by-7-1/2-Foot Outdoor Storage Shed with Window Review

I bought this elsewhere and have installed it on a stable platform on concrete blocks.It is large enough for lawnmower and quite a bit of storage.I felt the roof was fairly well constructed.. it does have a complete poly floor. The doors are somewhat flimsy and hard to close completely but I think they are as good as it comes with these outside little poly buildings.
I am fairly handy with tools and it took me and wife 1 day to assemble..
be real careful with using a power driver on the screws as they are real easy to strip and follow the directions exactly when putting the door on the front of the building. The door directions are a little bit confusing especially the channel.
I like the style better than other manufacturers.Being all poly i hope to avoid deterioration over time which is why i chose this over constructing one of wood. There are extensions that are available to enlarge the building they seem to be fairly expensive..about $300 bucks [...]
Before u buy check out some poly buildings at your local big box store to see if u can assemble. it may be a little more challenging than some people expect.
Overall i would recommend this building.

(More customer reviews)Every year I say I'm going to cover the windows and every year I don't. This year however I looked on Amazon and found the right product for the right price. I even got the nine pack which worked out well because I turned one sheet sideways and used it to cover two smaller kitchen windows.
I followed the directions and cleaned the surface once with cleaner and when I was ready to apply the tape I cleaned again with Alcohol. The first one was a little crooked (but still worked) but by the time I got to #4 it was smooth sailing.
I can feel them move slightly in the breeze so I know that they are keeping the cold out. I would definitely recommend this product.
ps I'm a not so young lady and I did it all by myself.

This is my second Kuhl. I purchased the original one from M&M Appliances in Washington, DC, but took it back because it was damaged - compressor ripped from the mounts and refrigerant lines bent - and the backup battery was dead on arrival. Second unit seems to be in much better condition. It was not damaged and the backup battery is not dead. Friedrich also mailed me a new backup battery (see their website for the form to fill out for a free battery).
Installation was a bit time consuming and required more tools than you'd expect for a window a/c install. The hardware that comes with the unit is excellent. It is sturdy and well built. Installation is definitely intended to be semi-permanent. I will not be removing this unit every winter like I have with previous window units.
Unit cools very well and is very quiet when compared to bargain brands at many stores. Discharge air temperature with R410a seems to be lower than most previous air conditioners that use R22. Depending on temperature and humidity in the room, the unit will sometimes blow visible fog from the vents.
This air conditioner is very well built. Sound dampening could have been increased - the unit makes a bit more noise than I'd like for the premium price tag. Friedrich should consider insulating the compressor in order to keep noise down. Compressor makes an oscillating sound at a frequency of about 2 - 3 hertz. Fan noise is minimal, which I attribute to the large vent design. The most irritating sound is the water splashing on the condenser fan. This problem could be solved by more sound insulation or by a condensate drain (although I understand that the condensate splashing on the condenser increases efficiency). Still -- VERY QUIET when compared to most alternatives.
All features work well except for the auto fan mode (energy saver), which cycles the fan too frequently to "test the air temperature." I leave it set for continuous mode, which I prefer anyway. I do have a gripe about the remote control - it doesn't sync with the unit's control panel, so if you make a change on the unit and then go to the remote, the remote still has its previous settings. Would be nice if the remote was RF instead of IR so that it didn't have to be pointed at the unit and it could auto-sync whenever settings are changed at the unit.
If you buy one of these, definitely read the instructions. Some parts of the install are not intuitive, and there are many features that you'll want to familiarize yourself with.
Some people have complained that the unit does not display the accurate temperature. This can be adjusted under the *temperature offset (TO)* section of the menu, along with a number of other settings.
I hope to get many years of trouble free use out of this unit.

I found these at Great Indoors and read the simple instructions to cut the shade, fold over half and it would fit my arch. A custom fitting shade in minutes! I've had mine up for longer than I would like to admit (ok, about a year ;) but it looks fine (no one can tell it's a temp) and it still sticks great. Unlike previous reviewer, I had no problems. I get headaches so I wanted to be able to darken my room. I stuck up one of the room darkening Redi Shades behind behind my wood blinds. Trimmed & hung with the self adhesive strip, less than 5 min! They're great for those weird sized windows that are no one sees and are so expensive to have custom made. They're inexpensive, so throw it away (recycle) if it wears out! Now I see they have blackout and arches, pre-made, as well as fabric, vinyl and color ones too! Check out their website. I LOVE REDI-SHADES! Only wish I knew about them years earlier! Hey, this might be a great house warming gift! It's so expensive to cover all the windows in a new house, (and wait for their arrival with sheets on them), and not many people seem to know about these yet!

The majority of the film is frosted, though there are a few small areas that are not (so I can still tell who's there when the doorbell rings). It was pretty easy to put up, though getting it cut to size was a little tricky for me since I don't really like to measure things. It goes up with just a little water and the included squeegee. I've had it on the window for a few weeks now with no problems.

Frigidaire 6000-BTU Mini Compact Window Air Conditioner Review

(More customer reviews)I have this unit installed in the bedroom. A very quiet unit, can hardly hear the compressor kick on. Perfect for the bedroom....12x14. The noise is less than a box fan. I leave it running 24/7 and surprisingly does not effect the power bill a lot, seems real efficient. I had to adjust the tilt of the unit after the first install because of a sloshing sound from the fan in the rear of the unit. This was caused by the fan sloshing the water. The unit needs to be nice and level. The buttons on the front are easily cleaned, and the remote is the same way with its flat design. The filter comes out and is cleaned with out any effort. The unit does not have a fresh air/recirculate switch as some of the larger models. From the large amounts of humidity it pulls from the room, I assume its only recirculate. After a few days without any rain in a small room over night, it can leave you with a dry throat and irritated sinuses from the low humidity in the room.

I had originally bought a Gila product in the Depot, but opened that only to find that you had to purchase their own solution in order to install, plus it looked too complicated. Returned. After reading reviews, I bought this Artscapes product through Amazon and am extremely happy with the result. It was very easy to install using household water and soap, and they even provided the squeegie. Design is beautiful. Only 4 stars due to price, which seems a bit high. The quality of the product is top notch though. Fast free delivery from Amazon too.
